    Exploring the Tulum Ruins

Tulum has become a trending vacation spot for bloggers and travelers alike in recent years.  It’s not hard to understand why.  With beautiful beaches, delicious tacos and a vibrantly rich cultural history, the Yucatan Peninsula has proven itself to be one of the hottest destinations on the planet right now (no pun intended).

While many tend to stick to the all-inclusive resorts and Eco-chic boutiques, I am here to tell you that there are some wonderful reasons to vacate the lounge chairs for an early morning excursion to the famed Tulum Ruins.   A mere 30 minute drive from Playa del Carmen (or one hour from Cancun), puts you right in the heart of the quaint little city of Tulum.  This stunning, ancient-walled city used to be home to around 6,000 Mayans between the 13th and 15th century.  Some say the energy here is still palpable.

Upon arriving, there are several yaxche (or ceiba) trees lining the pathway.  These magnificent trees are thought to be the axis mundi – a symbolic connection between the realms of heaven, earth and the underworld, not only in Mayan philosophy, but others as well.

Although we haven’t typically used tour companies in the past, we were really looking forward to having YucaTreks be our guides for the day and show us around.  It was more like having a fun (and really informational) friend take us out on an adventure.  We gained so much insight into the Mayan culture and traditions.

We arrived just as the sun began to spill over the Mayan Riviera Coast, the weather slightly cool as the dew evaporated and the wildlife awakened.  We were greeted at the entrance by an adorable creature I’d never seen before, a white nosed coati-mundi.  It resembled something like a mix between a raccoon and a lemur and was digging away in the dirt for a delectable breakfast of worms and insects.  Unfortunately he was a little too quick to snap a good photo of him, but something tells me he hams it up for the early birds, like us, on most days.

Aside from the temperate weather, another perk of arriving early is avoiding the masses of tourists that are sure to arrive in the hours to come.  It almost felt like we had the grounds to ourselves as our guide led us from site to site, garnishing Richie and I with interesting historic tidbits along the way.

What a breathtaking view the Mayans chose as home base.  The lush palms and greenery against the turquoise blue waters were a magnificent sight to see.  The Mayans were incredibly intellectual and excelled in creative problem solving, which you’ll come to find is evident in many ways.  For example, the main “building”, El Castillo, was used as a lighthouse.  At dusk, if the captain could see light through both of the tiny windows, they could be assured they were on the correct route to shore (and would avoid the sharp coral reef barrier).   They were also highly in tune with the cyclical nature of life and death, illustrating their ideals in ancient carved stones across many of their structures.

Looking out onto the sparkling Caribbean Sea from the ruins, you’ll notice a long, white “shelf” where the waves break, not too far from the shore.  This divide in the surf is part of the Great Maya Reef, second in size to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef and stretching in length to over 600 miles.  Directly in front of the El Castillo “lighthouse” is the only area of surf that does not clash against the coral reef, thanks to some brave (and mighty-lunged) Mayan swimmers who chiseled away the reef using flint rocks to provide an easier route back to land for their boats.

Although iguana has been used in some traditional dishes, don’t expect to find it too easily on the menu.  You will, however, spot them sunbathing across the grounds quite a bit.  This fellow here is gloating in all his glory after fending off the unwanted presence of another iguana in his territory.

    Tulum Ruins Tips:

    • Arrive early!  They open at 8am so get there beforehand and have your ticket ready (if you’re with a tour, choose the earliest tour time)
    • If possible, try avoiding peak days and seasons (Jan-April).  Opt for “off-days” like Monday-Wednesday, chances are you’ll encounter less tourists and have better photo ops.
    • If you are prone to mosquito bites, bring a bottle of repellent with you.
    • It heats up quickly in the morning so wear sunblock and bring a hat/sunglasses.
    • There are no restrooms at the ruins once you’re inside so take care of your business ahead of time.
    • The entry ticket cost is very reasonable, $5 USD and kids under 13 are free.  *It is recommended to have cash and exact change for the ticket counter, but if you’re with a tour, you need not worry!  Tours will have your tickets in advance.
    • The parking lot is about a 1km walk to the entrance of the site, but is quite easy and enjoyable.
    • An hour or two is plenty of time to wander around the ruins.
    • The Tulum ruins are beautiful, but it was a much more interesting experience to have a guide with us to teach us the history, culture, plant uses and animal life in the area.
    • Bring a swimsuit and take a dip in the ocean below the ruins afterwards!

“The greatest wisdom is in simplicity.  Love, respect, tolerance, sharing, gratitude, forgiveness.  It’s not complex or elaborate. The real knowledge is free. It’s encoded in your DNA.  All you need is within you.  Great teachers have said that from the beginning. Find your heart, and you will find your way.”  – Carlos Barrios, Mayan elder and Ajq’ij of the Eagle Clan

    After the ruins…

After walking around the ruins all morning, we worked up quite an appetite.  Luckily, our new friends, Eder and Cesar, were two steps ahead of us and had the perfect spot for lunch in mind.  It wasn’t long before we were pulling into our own private little slice of heaven on the beach, right on the edge of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Nature Reserve.

If you haven’t spent an afternoon lounging in the surf or sand in Tulum yet, you’re missing out.  While our lovely hosts prepared us a picnic style lunch, I took the opportunity to soak up some salt, sun and even a cerveza.

  • 5 Health Related Reasons to Take the Day off and go to the Beach

5 Health Related Reasons to Take the Day off and go to the Beach

“The sea washes away the ills of all mankind.” ~ Euripides (420 BC)

    ~

Next time someone gives you grief for spending the day at the beach, just let them know you’re actually working on your health.  There are plenty of proven studies out there that support this, and who am I to argue!  I, for one, always feel as relaxed leaving the beach as I do after a good massage.  It’s important to point out that much of these health benefits are acquired by actually interacting with the physical nature of the beach.  Swim in it, play on it, dig into it, get your hands dirty and your hair wet.  When you fully experience the beach is when the beach really lets you reap her benefits.  Of course, this is time and weather permitting and some beach action is better than none at all.  The most important thing is that you have the opportunity to soak it in as much as you can and enjoy every moment of it.  So, go on, take the day off, it’s good for you.

    DeziStyle

    1.  Beauty Benefits:  Do you ever think about how much the beach gives us?

Cleansing:  The minerals in sea water are great for your skin.  The iodine in the water acts as an antibacterial and anti-fungal, helping to remove excess gunk from your pores and prevent breakouts amongst other health benefits.

Exfoliation:  Sand, nature’s natural exfoliant.  Take a walk on the beach or dig your toes into the sand to scuff off all those dead skin cells.  It’s free, unlike that $5 exfoliation uncharge at the nail salon.

Beachy Hair:  When the blow dryer fails, the beach prevails.  The beach can be your own personal hair stylist.  Let your hair down and allow the elements of your environment to permeate through you.  Its worth noting that the more fun you have, the better it turns out.

That J-Lo Glow:  There is such a thing as a healthy tan.  See our past article on that here.  However, do take certain precautions like using a safe, all-natural sun block, avoid prolonged exposure during peak hours and keeping your face (the most sensitive skin on your body) out of direct sunlight.

Skin Tightening:  The minerals found in the ocean act like a natural firming bath.  Swimming in the sea can actually slow down the decline of your skin’s elasticity.

Beach Body:  Who needs a gym when you have the beach?  Dare I quote Stepbrothers when I say, “Soo many activities!”.  You can run, bike, swim, surf, boogie board, play a sport or search the shores for seashells, all of which not only burn more calories than when you’re not on sand, but also includes all the other health benefits listed above.  Earn that beach body at the beach!

    DeziStyle

    2.  Sea water is mother nature’s liquid vitamin.  Many people take supplements such as iodine, magnesium or potassium to promote healthy hair, nails, metabolism, hormone regulation and overall energy but why not just commit yourself to spending more time at the beach?  These minerals (and more) are found naturally in the sea water and are absorbed through your skin as you swim!

    DeziStyle

    3.  A day at the beach lowers your stress levels.  Breathing in fresh ocean air has it’s obvious and not so obvious health benefits.  It’s no secret that a sea breeze and the soundtrack of the waves are effective tools in soothing the soul and relaxing the mind and body.  Most of us tend to inhale deeply at the first scent of the salty air, which contains negatively charged ions that assist in oxygen absorption in the body and making it easier to breathe.  This is also why beach yoga can be so therapeutic.

Another argument is that being exposed (in a bikini or otherwise) to the elements of mother nature is liberating and puts us more in touch with our primitive roots.  Its never too late for a skinny dip, just be sure its a designated area.  Europe is certainly onto something here..

    DeziStyle

    4.  Get your daily dose of Vitamin D.  Aside from a gorgeous glow, you can absorb 100% of the daily recommended dose of Vitamin D through your skin in just 10 minutes in the sun.  Vitamin D effects your biological function, improves your mood, increases your energy and can even help prevent diseases and other disorders.

    DeziStyle

    5.  Sleep tight!  After a day at the beach, a great night’s sleep is sure to ensue.  This is your body responding to all it has experienced as it sinks into a deep, comfortable state of total relaxation.  Simply going to the beach is an anti-depressant and a de-stressor.  Lastly, eat a healthy meal for dinner and be sure to moisturize before bed, your mind and body will awake with a new, refreshed feeling.

Memorial Day weekend was one of maxin’ and relaxin’ at the beautiful Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes.  Luckily, the ominous weather in the days leading up to the famed 3 day weekend dissipated into crystal blue skies and balmy weather.  I was mostly excited to just lounge around in my bikini and order food by the pool but it’s in my nature to explore and that’s exactly what I did.

Just a stroll away are some impressive cliffs and rocky shorelines.  If you follow my stories on Snapchat, you explored a small cave with me that was only accessible by climbing down a steep rockfall and timing your leap onto a patch of wet sand with the rolling waves…try doing that in a bikini!  I happened to catch the eye of a few spectators on the cliffs, apparently inspiring two younger boys to follow suit into the cave and ask me to take a photo with them.  I had to admire their initiative.

On the other side of the resort, far from the pools and restaurants, a precipitous pathway led to yet another beach, the shore made up of large weathered rocks.  This one was more secluded and quite a trek to get down to the bottom but well worth it.  If you want to feel like you’ve stumbled across a small European enclave, Pescadero Trail is your spot.  I couldn’t pull myself away until the sun had already set itself behind the lonely lighthouse on the cliffs and it was a race against the remaining light to reach the top.  Pastel clouds swallowed the sun like a delicate shell just as I made it back to the resort, forcing me to retire from my adventures for the day and hang my bikini up to dry for the following day’s shenanigans.

Anyways, since my favorite season is just around the bend and many more trips are to follow, I’ve been actively on the hunt for some new summer suits.  I just adore the tropical vibe of Lychee swimwear and the navy birds of paradise print couldn’t have been more appropriate for my mini vacay.  With my choice of pool, spa, beach and jacuzzi, I pretty much lived in this bikini all weekend long.  In fact, its taken me longer this past week to adjust back into the real world than some of my international travels have.  I guess that means it was a successful getaway.  Don’t get me wrong though, I’m already plotting the next one and you’d better believe it involves a bikini or two!

Mint is one of my favorite colors for Spring.  It’s refreshing and cool tone is a wonderful way to break away from the dull, monotonous colors of winter.  But it’s not just this fabulous shade that has me gaga for this swimsuit.  It’s level of comfort far exceeds the semi-suggestive look of it and as many of you already know, I’m a sucker for versatility.  When en route to the beach, I just so happened to wear a grey v-neck maxi dress over the bikini, creating a fun, contrasting mesh of criss cross design to my ensemble, whilst offering a bit of support for the ‘girls’ as well.  All around perfect for summer vacations, afternoons by the pool, trips to the beach and catching the eye of that really cute guy sitting a few beach chairs away.

Siempre Golden has officially made it’s way into my heart.  I love the super sexy cuts and interesting tweaks made to set their swimwear apart from the gazillion other bikini lines.  This style is the grey Tres Amigos bikini with brazilian cut bottoms.  I like this foggy grey color for it’s uniqueness of shade but also really love the woven friendship bracelet patterned straps.  The top can also double as a cute bralette to be worn under low cut tee’s or racerback tanks, and you know how I love my multifunctional pieces.

    Bathing Suit by American Apparel

One of my favorite parts about Italy was the time spent beach side in Santa Maria.  After the Amalfi Coast it was nice to spend some time at a beach with only a handful of locals and a little beach bungalow pumping jazz music.  The water was crystal clear, displaying the sea life like a placid glass case.  With perfectly hot weather in store it was the ideal afternoon for doing nothing more than lounging around in a bikini.  I picked up this one at American Apparel just before I left on my trip.  I love, love, love pieces like this because I like to have multifunctional clothing, especially when traveling.

Although this suit is most definitely made for the water, it’s super cute to wear with a skirt (high waisted pencil or skater) or pair with denim shorts.  I bought the same suit in black and  found it works really well as a sexy top at night.  Side boob, anyone?  Anyways, American Apparel always has a few great pieces like this one that are simple to dress up or down so if you’re ever in the market for something classic and understated, might I recommend you take a peek at what they have in store.  And most definitely check out Santa Maria di Castellabate should you find yourself  driving the coast of Italy in search of  a sleepy little beach town.
