  • Fall Floral by Ralph Lauren

    Fall Floral by Ralph Lauren

    Fall in southern California is nothing to complain about.  We get beach days and sweater weather alike making it a versatile season for both fashion and fun.  To be honest, I first found this Ralph Lauren maxi wrap dress in red, not black.  I really loved how festive and warm the red looked but made the mistake of not buying it on the spot.  When I returned for the dress, they had sold out.  Let this be a lesson, ladies: If you love it, buy it.

    That’s not to say I don’t adore this beautiful black piece.  I grew up with a deep love for easy, breezy maxi dresses and this one seriously makes me want to twirl.  I happened to pair it with my new Charles David caged heels but for a more relaxed look, black booties will do the trick and won’t cost you in the fashion department.  Another added bonus: an adjustable drawstring, making this dress officially perfect for fall feasting.

  • 9 Unique Halloween Events Happening in L.A. This Weekend

    9 Unique Halloween Events Happening in L.A. This Weekend

    If crowded clubs and obnoxious waiting lines have made you fear Halloween weekend in Los Angeles, I feel you.  After more than a decade in LA, I’m relieved to know that there are plenty of options out there to spice up the holiday in a whole new way.  Here are some fun ways to get in the spirit and enjoy All Hallows Eve.

    1.  Cemetery Tour –  The Hollywood Forever Cemetery, better known for its weekend screenings, will be hosting a 2 hour walking tour with legendary tombstone stops along the way including Cecil B. Demille, Rudolph Valentino, Vampira, Carl “Alfalfa” Switzer, Mickey Rooney and more.

    What was the witch’s favorite subject in school?   Spelling.

    1.  Oktoberfest – There are quite a few Oktoberfest celebrations happening throughout the month so find the closest one to you and grab yourself a bratwurst and a cold beer!  Just beware, you might also happen to stumble across dachshund races, dancing and live music.

    What kind of streets do zombies like the best?   Dead ends.

    3.  The Dark Harbor – Unlike Halloween Horror Nights, the Queen Mary lets you dress up in costume on Halloween.  Enjoy shows, rides, mazes, live music and much more.  If you happen to miss out on the fun during Halloween, they also host a Dia de los Muertos event on November 1st that even offers up a cash prize for the best costume of the night!  *Tip: Buy your ticket online (and at least 24 hours in advance) for a discount.

    How does a ghost say goodbye to a vampire?   So long, sucker!

    4.  Sinister Pointe Trust Challenge – This is not your typical maze of people being shuffled through a crowded haunted house.  This scenario is a little different.  You will enter a pitch black chamber by yourself as your partner watches from a control room via infrared cameras.  Once inside, your partner will instruct you on how to collect certain items and survival coins in order to successfully complete your mission.  Once achieved, it’s their turn to brave the dark in a totally different chamber with a whole new set of creepy characters.  *Tip: This works ideally for 2 people but they can accommodate groups of 4 as well.

    How do monsters tell their future?   They read their horrorscope.

    5.  The REAL Haunted Houses – If the internet says it’s true, it must be, right?  For those that dare, create your own customized tour around town and visit some of LA’s most notable haunted digs.

    Why did the ghost go into the bar?   For the Boos.

    6.  Halloween Harvest Festival – If you’re up for a haunted corn maze, this particular location stays open late (12am on weekends) for a different kind of experience.  Also offered up here: hayrides, gemstone mining, rock climbing, crafting and other spooktacular events.

    Where do mummies go for a swim?   The dead sea.

    7.  Escape Room L.A. – Grab a group of friends (up to 11 total) and use your smarts to escape one of four themed rooms using clues and solving puzzles.  You will have up to 1 hour to complete the task or be haunted for eternity!

    What is a vampire’s favorite ice cream flavor?   Veinilla.

    8.   Museum of Death – This is the real deal.  Located in the heart of Hollywood, the MOD is sure to get you into the Halloween spirit.  Spend as much time as you’d like during this self guided tour to see crime scenes photos from notorious murders, view a collection of body bags, coffins and full size replicas of execution devices, or watch endless hours of autopsies, deaths and the actual recruitment video for the Heaven’s Gate Cult.

    What do you call two spiders that just got married?   Newlywebbed.

    9.  Who Framed Roger Rabbit? – Grand Performances is screening Who Framed Roger Rabbit (AKA one of my all time fave movies) on this Thursday at the Marina Pavilion in DTLA for free!  Seats are first come, first serve though so come early and bring a blanket to snuggle up on.

    HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

  • 10 Trails in L.A. That’ll Work Your Booty!

    10 Trails in L.A. That’ll Work Your Booty!

    Don’t underestimate the effectiveness a hiking trail can have on your health.  Hiking isn’t only one of the trendiest things you can do in LA, it’s also one of the best workouts you can get – for your booty and the rest of your body.  Imagine a gym: four walls, heavy machinery and bad music blaring over the speakers.  Now imagine yourself on top of a mountian, wind blowing in your hair and the feeling of triumph as you gaze over the horizon.  Which sounds better?  I thought so.

    Los Angeles has some great hiking options throughout the city.  Here are my favorites:

    1.  Temescal Canyon – 15900 Pacific Coast Hwy, Pacific Palisades, CA 90272

    This is my go-to hiking trail.  It’s a great combination of uphill and downhill (great for the glutes) with some pretty spectacular views of the Pacific ocean.  There are plenty of grassy areas and a park where one can picnic, rest or do cartwheels (as I do) at the bottom of the hill.  The bonus: Parking in the designated lot at the beginning of the trail will cost you $7 but there’s always free parking on Temescal Canyon Road, just before Sunset Blvd.  Plus, you’re just a moment’s drive away to the beach!

    2.  Murphy Ranch Trail – Capri Drive & Casale Road, Pacific Palisades, CA 90272

    This can be a great workout if you know what you’re looking for.  There is a stairway that descends about 500+ steps down to yet another trail which will eventually lead you to an old, deteriorating Nazi compound from the 1930’s that is now covered in graffiti.  It can be tricky to find but worth the adventure.

    3.  Culver City Stairs – 6300 Hetzler Road, Culver City, CA 90232

    Nature’s stair master.  If the views from the top don’t satisfy you, maybe all the delectable spots to dine in around downtown Culver City will.

    4.  Santa Monica Stairs – 4th St & Adelaide Dr, Santa Monica, CA 90402

    Not technically a hike but it’s a guaranteed way to feel the burn.

    5.  Griffith Park – 4730 Crystal Springs Dr, Los Angeles, CA 90027

    If you spent the day hiking through this park you might have come across equestrian trails, playgrounds, the LA Zoo or the Greek Theater.  There’s much to see and do here, hiking is just one of them.

    6.  Fryman Canyon Park –  8401 Mulholland Dr, Studio City, CA 91604

    This is one of the more leisurely hikes of the ones listed here but still a great workout nonetheless.  Try running the course or adding weights if you find it to be unchallenging.

    7.  Runyon Canyon –  2000 N Fuller Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90046

    Even if you’re not an LA local, you’ve probably heard of Runyon Canyon mentioned before.  It seems to be one of the more popular trails in all of Los Angeles for a few reasons, although some may not be as obvious as others.  Despite the attraction of seeing celebrities or it’s breathtaking vantage points, it actually is an incredible workout, especially if you opt for the non-paved route.    *A friendly tip:  to avoid crowds or the unpleasant smells of dog “business”, try hitting the trail in the early mornings or later in the evenings.

    8.  Will Rogers – 1501 Will Rogers State Park Rd, Pacific Palisades, CA 90272

    This was my original go-to hiking spot when I first moved to L.A.  The length of the trail is doable for even the most inexperienced hikers but offers some great booty burning paths.  Enjoy views of the ocean and the occasional UCLA athletes.  😉

    9.  Franklin Canyon Park – 2600 Franklin Canyon Dr, Beverly Hills, CA 90210

    Many Angelenos aren’t aware of this hidden gem in the middle of Beverly Hills.  It’s a peaceful 605-acre park that includes 5 miles of trails. picnic areas and a lake filled with ducks.  Great for a daytime date!

    10.  Abalone Cove Shoreline Park – 5970 Palos Verdes Dr S, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275

    A bit more of a drive for those living in or close to central L.A. but well worth it.  Abalone cove sits at the bottom of a cliff, accessible only to those who dare make the decent down to its two beaches and picnic areas.  Try working your way down and back up again as many times as your legs will let you. I promise you’ll feel the burn with this one if you give it a chance.

  • You Might be a Travel Addict if…

    You Might be a Travel Addict if…

    ad·dic·tion  (n) : the fact or condition of being addicted to a particular substance, thing, or activity.

    You may not have thought of your love for travel as such – an addiction.  But as a fellow avid traveler, it’s time we call it like it is.  We experience many of the same cravings, symptoms and withdrawals that any fiend might describe.  I’d like to believe this addiction is a healthy one to have though, so feel no guilt as you shamelessly pencil in one trip after the other.  In the end, you are merely building yourself up with each experience, to become the magnificent person you are today.  Happy travels!

    You Might Be A Travel Addict If…

    1.  You chose a career that allows you to travel.  You may find yourself sleep deprived and/or underpaid at times, but its worth it.  Rack up those points, baby!

    2.  You can’t date someone who doesn’t have the travel bug, too.  They’ll never understand how you can be dreaming of your next adventure while you’re still in the present one.

    3.  To follow up, if someone you’re dating ever gives you an ultimatum, they will never win over travel.  Never.  So it’s not recommended, unless you want to break up, that is.

    4.  You have the Skyscanner or Skiplagged app on your main screen.  Let’s face it, if you have any travel app on your cell phone’s home screen, you are definitely going to be labeled a travel addict.

    5.  You feel antsy when there are no upcoming trips on the calendar.   Home is just the place where you store your stuff, give your family a hug (and prove you are not a complete vagabond), do laundry and re-pack your suitcase.

    DeziStyle

    6.  You take road trips often.  When you can’t swing an international jaunt, you’ll settle for a road trip somewhere, anywhere.  Even if it’s just for a night.

    7.  You could be described as personable.  People who travel are just sexier.  There’s a certain confidence that emits from those who have had to navigate their way through world, at times in precarious situations.  If you’re traveling the right way, you meet a lot of people,  making you more outgoing and open to life in general.

    8.  You have luggage nearby and ready to load up on a moment’s notice.  You may even have an emergency go-bag ready.  If you have that, than you most definitely must have your ready-for-anything pieces in the trunk of your car…you know, the spare bikini, flats and sweater.

    9.  You have subscriptions to multiple travel deal websites.  Sure, you might not open every single email they send but you feel a certain comfort knowing there will always be a travel deal awaiting you, should you click the link.

    10.  You’ve mastered the skill of sleeping anywhere.  Planes, trains, automobiles and all those nights in hostels have built up your tolerance to uncomfortable sleeping situations.  At this point, you know you’ve got to catch your Z’s when and where you can so you can hit the ground running when you arrive to your next destination.

    DeziStyle

    11.  Your passport is your prized possession.  You flash that baby like a badge of honor to TSA, customs agents, family, friends, the guy ID’ing you at the liquor store…whoever will look at all the pretty stamps you’ve collected.  You might even carry around your passport instead of an ID card just so you can have that fleeting ‘international feeling’.

    12.  You aren’t scared of trying new foods.  In fact, foods are probably one of the most enticing things about travel to you.  You look forward to finding the most unique and delicious dishes in each destination, and hopefully one of those meals will include the company of a friendly local.

    13.  You have friends around the world.  Your experience wouldn’t be complete without meeting at least a few local people and making lasting friendships.

    DeziStyle

    14.  You pack like a pro.  No need for an extensive packing list or a week of preparation.

    15.  Foreign languages and accents are a major turn on.  Don’t believe me?  Just hop over to Italy…or Spain…or Brazil…or maybe even Australia…

    16.  If you’re from America, the regular chain grocery stores at home seem like glorified storage lockers for fake food.  There’s no sadder feeling than coming back to the States after eating the freshest, realest and most flavorful foods around the world.  Thank heavens for Whole Foods.

    DeziStyle

    17.  Airports don’t intimidate you and TSA is a breeze.  You’ve done this drill a thousand times and none of it unsettles you.  It’s just part of the process at this point.

    18.  Your Facebook wall is filled with photos and tidbits of your adventures abroad.  On the contrary, your Facebook feed is probably filled with baby pictures and wedding albums.  They seemed to have jumped the gun, no?

    19.  You’re a member of ASW (A Small World).  This was a great free service to link up with other business savvy travelers around the world.  These days there is an annual membership fee of $110 but for those who travel frequently and want to connect with other like-minded individuals, it’s a great social network to join.

    20.  Culture shock happens when you come back home, not when you are traveling.  It takes time to sink back into your ‘real life’ routine…and it bores you immediately.  If you’re not bored, its probably because your mind is preoccupied with planning the next trip.

    21.  It isn’t unusual to find random coins or bills from other countries in your wallet or backpack.  It might even inspire you to re-visit a country..because you wouldn’t want those Euros to go to waste, of course.

    DeziStyle

    22.  You can relate to nomads.  Home is where you decide it to be.

    23.  You need a vacation from your vacation.  You spend your trip trying to make the very most of your time and get in as much as you possibly can.  Hey, you can sleep when you’re dead.

    24.  Family, friends and even random strangers on social media hit you up for travel tips and advice about anywhere around the world.  It’s just assumed you’d know better at this point.  TripAdvisor who?

    25.  You refer to cities in airport codes.  I mean, BCN is obviously easier to say than Barcelona, right?

    26.  Your friends at home think you speak strange lingo sometimes.  “Same, same but different” ring a bell?  How about getting together for a lekker Braai?

    27.  You convert the price of something into how much travel you could get for that amount.  Don’t lie, we all do it.  That new handbag costs how much??  A trip’s worth to Mexico, you say?

    28.  You feel the most free when you are in a foreign place.  The excitement of not knowing where the hell you are is quite the orgasmic experience.

    DeziStyle

    29.  You cry.  But only when it’s time to go back home.

    30.  You write blogs on being a travel addict.  Ah-hem…

  • 5 Frequent Faux Pas Americans Make When Traveling Abroad

    5 Frequent Faux Pas Americans Make When Traveling Abroad

    It’s inevitable and we all do it at some point or another when traveling– we unintentionally embarrass ourselves with a seemingly innocent and familiar gesture.  I know I’ve been guilty of it on more than a few occasions.  Who doesn’t love to take a sweet thumbs up photo in front of an amazing location?  However, if you’re passing through certain countries, you might want to reconsider.  As humans, we not only communicate verbally, but we express ourselves with facial inflections, gestures and body language, as well.  Needless to say, it’s important that we learn and utilize mannerisms that are politically correct, respective to each culture we visit.

    Here are the top 5 most commonly misused gestures that I wish someone had told me about when I got my passport:

    1.  Thumbs Up

    Generally seen as “cool” or a sign of approval in the United States…or perhaps a roadside request for a lift in various parts of the world, but you might get a different reaction from the locals should you be in Thailand, Greece, Iran or Afghanistan.  Thumbs up in these countries are viewed as profane, and in some places, like giving the ‘bird’.  On the contrary, it is known as “money” in Japan or “zero”  in France.

    2.  Peace!

    This one can get you in some trouble if you aren’t aware of the direction your palm is facing when you make a peace sign.  In the U.K., Australia and some Commonwealth countries, a peace sign with the palm facing inwards is taken as a insult similar to “up yours”.  However, the palm out gesture is widely accepted around the world…most notably, in Asia.

    DeziStyle

    3.  A-OK!

    Things are definitely not OK when using this common gesture in Brazil, Turkey and Germany.  This is quite possibly the most difficult one for me to remember when overseas.  How else am I to articulate how delicious my mouthful of food is when the waiter asks how my meal tastes (with impeccable timing, of course) ?  No, the last thing you’d want to convey to a person in charge of your food, is that you think he or she is an asshole…Unless, perhaps they are, and you are feeling rather cantankerous.

    4.  Pointing & Summoning

    Generally, none of us get particularly warm and fuzzy when someone points at you or summons you by curling in their index finger with their palm facing up.  (Insert random memory of mom scolding me in public as a kid)  This is a pretty common feeling amongst many cultures, however, not as obvious to some.  It’s considered rude in China, Slovakia, Malaysia, East Asia, Singapore, the Philippines, and many other countries around the globe.  Should you wish to beckon someone, it is more appropriate to keep all fingers together and with the palm facing down, scoop your fingers in a scratching motion.  If you wish to point at something, offer a palm up gesture in the direction of which you wish to draw attention to, keeping all fingers together.  Think Vanna White!  Its safe to assume that it will garner you a more pleasant response, no matter where you go.

    DeziStyle

    5.  Yes Means No

    Imagine your frustration when asking someone if they could help you with directions in Bulgaria or certain parts of the Middle East, only to have them nod ‘yes’ and then walk away!  A nod up and down of the head in many cultures would indicate an affirmative or positive response, however, this gesture means the exact opposite in other parts of the world.  Good to know for the next time that creepy guy at the bar in Bulgaria asks to buy you a drink.

  • 8 Easy Ways to Go Organic & Save Money on Your Skincare Routine

    8 Easy Ways to Go Organic & Save Money on Your Skincare Routine

    Making the switch to all natural skin care products can seem intimidating but it doesn’t need to be.  Don’t waste one more day depriving your skin of all the benefits involved with these nutrient rich alternatives to your everyday routine.  It may take some getting used to (especially the smell of ACV) however, I’ve found these antidotes to be much more effective AND affordable than the mid-range products I’d been buying for years!  The great news is, whether you make your own or find your favorite all-natural line, there are many options out there.  Remember that you have spent your entire life shaping the condition of your skin so results don’t happen overnight but with consistency and the right remedies, you will begin to see an incredible difference in your overall appearance…I know I have.  And as with anything involving your personal health, always be sure to fully research something before you try it.

    ~~~
    1.  Switch out your moisturizer for Jojoba Oil.  Jojoba is the most similar to our skin’s natural sebum and doesn’t leave behind any greasy feeling residue.  I could bathe in this stuff.
    2.  Apple cider vinegar (commonly referred to as ACV) works wonders as a skin brightening toner, balancing your pH levels and getting rid of red, splotchy skin.  It’s nutrient rich properties are full of enzymes, pectin, B vitamins, folic acid and potassium that promote overall health.  Try replacing your old toner with your very own concoction of equal parts ACV and water (for more sensitive skin) and gradually work your way up to a more potent remedy.  It’s important to note that you only really get the benefits of ACV with the raw, unfiltered and unpasteurized version containing “the mother“.  It sounds foreign and, quite possibly, extraterrestrial but this is really one product that can be utilized for a number of things…but we’ll discuss that another time.  If you’re really looking to enhance the appearance of your skin, try apple cider vinegar as a toner and a daily supplement by mixing 1-2 tablespoons in water (or apple juice-yum!) to mask the flavor, up to three times a day.
    3.  Use coconut oil instead of lotion.  Simply put, I can’t believe I ever used drug store lotions.  The chemicals used in some can actually has reverse effects by stripping your skin of its natural oils.  Have you ever tried reading the ingredients on the back of your typical drug store brand?  It might have well been written in Chinese…that’s assuming you definitely don’t speak Chinese.  You can pick up a large container of organic coconut oil at Costco, in fact, I believe it comes in a two-pack.  (Oh, I love you Costco).  Keep one in the kitchen for cooking and stick the other one in your bathroom for slathering yourself up after the shower.  Your skin will thank you!    **Use your fingers to massage a dab of coconut oil under your eyes before bed to wake up looking refreshed.
    4.  Make your own body wash.  Your skin is the biggest organ on your body and comes into contact with many toxins and chemicals throughout the day, some coming from household products within your very own home.  Pollution and other particles are absorbed by your skin each day leaving it dry and susceptible.  Making your own wash smells delicious, costs less than buying other brands with similar quality ingredients and is completely customizable!  This is the recipe I’ve been using lately and I love it!
    5.  Vitamin E oil has so many benefits.  It’s frequently used for acne scars, eczema, psoriasis, brittle cuticles, sunburns, split ends and more.  Use vitamin E oil as an overnight lip repair or in place of chapstick.  As with coconut oil, you can also use a dab or two under each eye before bed as a under eye night serum.
    6.  Tea tree oil is an incredible product.  You can pick up a bottle for a couple bucks at Trader Joe’s or any grocery/beauty supply store that carries natural products.  Use it to spot treat pimples by lightly swabbing over it with a Q-Tip or adding to your favorite face mask mixture.
    7.  Raw honey face masks changed the game for my skin pampering routine.  Manuka honey is known to be the best choice for it’s potent antibacterial, anti-inflammatory compounds also containing antioxidant and humectant qualities.  In other words, honey masks help to aid in healing scars, breaking down the bacteria in pimples, retaining moisture in the skin and delaying the signs of aging.  Apply an even amount over your face with your fingers, gently massaging it into your skin and let sit for about 20 minutes before rinsing it off with lukewarm water.  Of course, Manuka honey is not the only kind you can use but be aware that as with most natural remedies, it’s crucial to buy organic, raw and unpasteurized.  *The heating (pasteurization) of these products kill the beneficial properties within.  For an added benefit, source local raw honey to help reduce allergies.
    8.  Replace your chemical-laden perfumes with all-natural scented oils such as rose, lavender, gardenia or jasmine.  Many boutiques can even customize a smell to your liking by combining a few of your favorites.  Be sure to opt for oils that are all natural with no artificial colors, scents or additives.  I find the best oils have no water or alcohol in them.  This makes for a higher quality product and will smell lovely much longer than your typical perfume.
  • Khongboon Swimwear at Sunset
    Khongboon Swimwear at Sunset
    It’s with a heavy heart that I must admit summer is coming to a close. However, I keep summer traditions alive by continuing my quest for the cutest bikinis all year round.  Just because summer season is winding down in L.A. doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of opportunities for cute suits in jacuzzis, hot springs and all those inevitable vacays.
    I’m certainly not the first to discover Khongboon.  Some of my best gals and fellow bloggers have all raved about these pretty swimsuits.  As many of you know, I’m a sucker for versatility and this suit is completely reversible!  This feature is especially handy when packing light since it’s a 2-in-1 bikini (god forbid we are seen in the same one twice).  The cherry on top?  It’s on sale for 50% off with free worldwide shipping right now!
  • 8 Un-Douchey Places You’ll Want to go on Your Next Girls Night Out in L.A.
    8 Un-Douchey Places You’ll Want to go on Your Next Girls Night Out in L.A.
    Girls nights should be spent having fun, catching up and making memories.  All too often, there’s some creeper who lurks in the background all night, nursing his drink and trying to muster up the courage to speak to you and your girlfriends while making uncomfortable eye contact from across the room.  We’ve all been there, but you ladies deserve better.  You deserve a douche-free environment to cut loose and enjoy a night out on the town.  Take a moment to browse through each link for specials, deals or lineups and feel free to share your favorite spots below!
    ~~~

    1.  Twilight Concerts | The Santa Monica Pier

    Running every Thursday night from 7-10pm until September 10th.  Its free, you can bring your own picnic and there’s live entertainment.  What more can you ask for?  It’s a great place to convene with the girls and catch up over some two buck Chuck and finger foods.  Catch the concert on the pier or lay a blanket on the sand under the colorful lights of the ferris wheel.  Not typically a douche hangout, so no need to be on guard here.

    DeziStyle

    2.  The Bungalow | 101 Wilshire Blvd. Santa Monica CA 90401

    I suppose hipsters would call it a “shabby chic beach house”.  The Bungalow has a great ambiance day or night.  It feels like more of a friend’s house party than a lounge.  I really love the indoor/outdoor appeal of this place.  Enjoy a cocktail under the sun on the patio or cuddle up to a cozy fireplace inside.  Up for a game?  There’s ping pong, checkers and a pool table awaiting you.  It’s important to remember there are D-bag high tides here but that’s mostly Friday and Saturday night.  Even so I’ll use the term lightly, as it’s still not as dubious of a crowd as most Hollywood hangouts are (with the exception of a few).  Try an ‘off-night’ like Tuesday for live music and a more relaxed crowd.  Hey, you’ll probably even score a sofa or two under some twinkling strung lights which are pretty hard to come across on the weekend.  As far as food and drinks are concerned, I haven’t had a complaint yet.

    DeziStyle

    3.  Firefly | 11720 Ventura Blvd. Studio City CA 91604

    Their specialty cocktails are delicious and the ambiance is charming.  Yelp gives this establishment a $$$ price range but if you’re opting out of dinner, drinks are still moderately priced.  Take over one of their overstuffed sofas in the library themed den or take a seat next to the patio fireplace.  There are no obvious signs from the front so it’s easy to miss but gives it more of a secluded, “members only” vibe.

    4.  The Blind Barber | 10797 W Washington Blvd. Culver City CA 90232

    Richie (my fiancé) thought it would be fun to take me here for a date night with another couple.  Imagine my surprise when he walked us right into a relatively unmarked barber shop.  He gave a friendly nod to the hip barber who was man-scaping another trendy fellow’s hair (that’s about as douchey as this place will get) and marched us straight to the back of the shop and into yet another unmarked door.   The confusion was real folks.  Down a short, dark hallway, a dimly lit room appeared with intimate booths and a bar adorned with flickering candles.  This speakeasy-esque bar was a totally unique experience and the food and drinks were so tasty!  If you’re a cheese-lover, you must try one of their signature gourmet grilled cheeses, they’re to die for!  This is a really intimate space for a girls night out with your closest friends and is just up the road from Downtown Culver City.  *Also served here: some serious eye candy

    5.  Cinespia | Hollywood Forever Cemetery

    I am so thrilled that these type of events are catching on.  I’ve been a regular at the Cinespia movie nights for the better part of decade and they’re just getting better with time.  Pre-show DJ’s spin music as the crowd fills in and appropriately themed photo booths now share the lawn with moviegoers.  These days, you’ll need to buy your tickets online in advance for $10-15.  On special nights, come in your pajamas and stay overnight for a movie marathon.  Bring a blanket, some wine and your favorite snacks and enjoy a movie under the stars.  *Don’t worry, you don’t actually sit directly on or next to any graves…unless that’s your thing.

    6.  Bar Chloe | 1449 2nd Street Santa Monica CA 90401

    A cozy atmosphere and fresh specialty cocktails are the theme at Bar Chloe.  They also offer a pretty legit happy hour menu that will keep your tummy full and your bank account happy.  Another perk: it’s short walking distance to Third Street Promenade and an array of other bars, restaurants and pubs.  On occasion, the girls and I will create our own version of a bar crawl and hop from place to place trying one appetizer and beverage per location.

    DeziStyle

    7.  Bottega Louie | 700 S Grand St. Los Angeles CA 90017

    I can’t help but stop at Bottega Louie any time I’m in DTLA.  You can almost say it’s become somewhat of a ritual.  I’ve never tasted anything I didn’t like here…and they do it all: signature cocktails, delectable dishes and sinful sweets.  The perfect place to start your girls night out for cocktails and a bite before heading into Downtown for a little debauchery.   Might I recommend arriving on the earlier side, as they don’t accept reservations.  However, they do seat 255 people at any given time so go hang at the bar or order yourself some portobella fries while you wait!

    *A little perk for locals or travelers staying in the area: Downtown Concierge offers a free shuttle service inside a limited area of Downtown, Los Angeles.  The shuttles operate like a personal chauffeur and will pick-up and drop-off riders anywhere inside the area. They’re ideal for Bottega Louie Guests, locals, hotel guests, large groups and guests wanting to explore downtown. Call 855-450-RIDE for more information or to arrange a pick up.

    8.  The Hollywood Improv | 8162 Melrose Ave. Los Angeles CA

    This place has single-handedly helped me burn more calories than the gym.  The Hollywood Improv may not have the curbside appeal that it’s competitors have but their shows don’t disappoint.  Tickets are relatively cheap (plus a standard 2 drink minimum) and I can’t say I remember ever waiting in any ridiculous lines..(ahem, Laugh Factory). Catch a case of the giggles with your girls and rest assured that any D-bags that may have made it inside the building will undoubtedly be mocked and ridiculed at their own expense, it’s all part of the fun!

    That 70’s Vibe

    Venice | CA

    Photography by Richie Chance

    Just when you thought it was safe to throw out your old bell bottoms, the fashion world has called upon them yet again.  I can’t say that I mind.  They’ve secretly never gone out of fashion in my mind, but I’ve done a pretty good job of keeping them tucked away in the recesses of my closet long enough.  Bell bottoms are back, ladies, and I’m here to tell you why that’s a good thing.

    First and foremost, flare leg pants accentuate your form and lengthen the appearance of your legs, especially when worn with heels.  Something about this cut just makes denim seem more sophisticated, or groovy, if you will.  This summer, try pairing them with crop tops, fitted (and tucked in) button downs, a flowing tee or off the shoulder top, or for those cooler nights, a cozy sweater.

    I really love high waisted pants, even more so with bell bottoms, it just seems appropriate.  This type of cut shows off the arch of your back and curve of your tush, even if that’s not your strongest feature, it helps.  I found this great pair at O2 Denim that hugs me in all the right places.  If you’ve been with me from the start, you’ll recognize that I wear O2 a lot.  That’s because their stretchy denim blends are the most comfortable to wear all day long.. even after an afternoon of indulging.  Don’t get me wrong, I still pop open the top button once I’m in the car but at least that sucker stays comfortably put when it needs to.  😉

  • 15 Weekend Getaways from LA for the Roadtrip Junkie

    15 Weekend Getaways from LA for the Roadtrip Junkie

    I eagerly look forward to summer every year.  Tis’ the season of warm weather and spontaneous road trips out of town.  Need some help choosing a destination?  There are many places to go but these 15 getaways are all just a drive away and are a guaranteed good time.

    1.  Big Bear

    A trip to Big Bear seems to mark itself on my calendar semi-annually.  Weather its winter or summer, it’s always a good time.  During the summer months, enjoy plenty of on-the-water activities including boating, jet skiing, paddle boarding and kayaking.  There are also an array of hiking and biking trails, concerts and events that take place daily.  Downtown is rather small but has everything you could need – restaurants, bars, cinema and even bowling.  AirBnB makes it easy to enjoy Big Bear like a local but if you’ve ever felt the need to explore a more unique accommodation, check out Castle Wood Cottages.

    2.  Los Olivos

    Los Olivos is one of five communities that make up the Santa Ynez Valley.  Most known for it’s wine tastings and small town vibe, it’s a gem of a location for a weekend escape.   The Santa Ynez Inn is the perfect boutique hotel for those seeking a little added romance.  Heated bathroom floors, jacuzzi tub and fireplace transforms your room into a cozy retreat, not to mention the perks a room key gets you when visiting local wineries.

    3.  Palm Springs

    Ah, Palm Springs.  The city with whom I’ve only recently been acquainted with but have frequented on several occasions.  There’s much to do, or nothing at all, if you prefer.  A two hour drive puts you in this tropical little desert oasis where you can eat, drink, swim, gamble, dance and play golf to your hearts content.  For more on Palm Springs, see our past article, Weekend Retreat: Palm Springs.

    4.  Oxnard

    Oxnard Beach may be a part of the greater Los Angeles area but you’ll feel lifetimes away from the hustle and bustle of city life.  Oxnard is definitely for those who are laying low.  Grab a good book and a bikini and you’ve got yourself the perfect afternoon.  As a foodie, you’ll have no shortage of restaurants to chose from and for the more adventurous type, fishing, water sports and a day trip to the Channel Islands are easily accessible.

    5.  Santa Barbara

    Santa Barbara could be considered L.A.’s younger, more virginal little sister.  An hour and a half north on the 101 puts you smack dab in the middle of State Street.  From here you can commence in any direction desired…eateries, shopping, outdoor activities, pristine beaches, farmers markets, art and world class entertainment.  Santa Barbara lacks nothing.  For a calendar of events, click here.

    6.  Bass Lake

    Bass Lake is an amazing getaway for two main reasons: sun and fun!  An day of jetski’s and eating finger sandwiches on the shore is my idea of a perfect afternoon, wouldn’t you say?  The surrounding Sierra National Forest makes for a venturesome playground of hiking, waterfalls and camping, should you favor a more intimate experience with the great outdoors.

    7.  San Diego

    San Dee-Ahh-Go (As Ron Burgundy refers to it)!  City meets beach life at its finest.  Find comfort in all the fine dining, luxury hotel chains and nightlife offered in downtown San Diego.  It serves as the perfect middle ground for those not wanting to indulge in the extreme scene of Las Vegas but seeking more than just a small town getaway.  Catch a Padres game or ride bikes on the strand and follow up your evening with rooftop dining and a host of events happening all around the city.  If you can’t find it here, you may not find it anywhere.

    8.  Rancho Palos Verdes

    Terranea Resort at Rancho Palos Verdes is quite deceptive – you would think you’re vacationing off the coast of Spain!  This massive resort includes beach access to incredible coastline and coves or their multiple ocean side pools.  Far enough away to feel as though you’re on holiday, but close enough to get away for just a night if that’s all the time you have.  **Be sure to check back often for specials and free night stays!

    9.  Kern River

    Kern River always brings back good memories.  Perfect for families or young couples and friends looking to immerse themselves in nature.  Rafting trips and BBQ’s are what Lake Isabella is all about.

    10.  Big Sur

    Big Sur is by far one of the most impressive coastlines in the world.  Whether you’re camping or shacking up in a plush resort, beauty surrounds you in every direction.  Lucia Lodge has an outdoor deck to enjoy food and beverages with some spectacular views that are certainly worth the inflated price tag.  Don’t let the drive deter you, its absolutely worth the trip.  Don’t forget your camera!

    11.  Madonna Inn, San Luis Obispo

    Madonna Inn should be pictured in the dictionary under ‘unique hotels’.  Whenever I find myself in the area, it’s impossible not to stop, if even for just a quick bite at Copper Cafe.  Should you decide to stay, enjoy one of their 110 whimsically themed rooms or lounge with a cocktail at the poolside terrace.  The hotel is situated on over 1,000 acres of lush rolling hills and offers horseback riding on the property itself.  If saddling up isn’t your thing, wine country is just at your fingertips.

    12.  Solvang

    Solvang was amongst my favorite California destinations growing up, and not much has changed.  This quaint little town is only about 2 hours away from Los Angeles but transports you to a Danish village with plenty of culinary delights and a relaxed atmosphere.  There is no shortage of bakeries or ice cream parlors, but if you’re craving something out of the norm, stop by the aptly named, Solvang Restaurant, for some piping hot Aebleskivers.  You won’t be disappointed.

    13.  Crystal Cove Beach Cottages, Newport Beach

    Crystal Cove Beach Cottages were built in the 1930’s as a small seaside colony.  Today, 21 cottages have been restored to reflect the period between 1935 and 1955, when the Cove transformed into a community.  However, don’t expect anything cookie cutter, each cottage is themed differently and range from individual to dorm style.   Located on the ocean side of PCH in Newport Beach, guests can enjoy the beach, local restaurants and spectacular views.

    14.  Harrahs Resort and Casino, Valley Center

    Harrah’s Resort and Casino sits tucked away in the beautiful rolling hills of Valley Center, just south of Temecula.  There are not many local restaurants or activities to partake in outside of the resort but why leave when you’ve got 2 pools, including a lazy river and 21+ section with a swim up bar?  They also host pool parties on the weekend both day and night, live shows and feature nine restaurants and cafés for you to choose from.  However, if you prefer to stay in your robe and catch up on your Zzz’s, room service will work just fine, just don’t forget to hit up the spa!

    15.  Glamping Hub, Various California Locations

    Glamping, camping, treehouses, tipis and yurts.  Glamping Hub has got to be one of the coolest sites to visit if you’re up for unique, naturalistic adventure.  From tree houses to airstreams…yurts and eco-villas…this site offers more than 200 accommodations in California alone.

  • How to Pair Summer Flats

    How to Pair Summer Flats

     “Shoes are just a pedestal.  What interests me is the power of the woman who wears them.”

    A good pair of flats can not only save you from achy feet but really make an outfit casual chic.  I love a cute pair of heels as much as the next girl but I have found that the right pair of flats can compliment your look by giving it a more relaxed yet sophisticated semblance.  Flats may not give you the same sexiness factor that heels do but there’s something to be said for a woman who can still exude the same kind of confidence in the way she carries herself.  So in some way, it’s kind of liberating.

    In big cities like Miami and Los Angeles, its not uncommon for women to wear heels everyday.  Some are even required to wear them to work but it seems brands have recognized the consumers desire for more versatile shoes.  More women are exploring footwear designs for everyday wear that offer a more modern and styled look.  Futhermore, our generation is significantly more aware of their overall health (Yes, they’re cute as hell but heels are not good for your feet, back or posture).  Perhaps you’ve discovered the beauty of flats long ago but I for one am finally appreciating all different varieties of flats other than just my combat boots and Uggs these days.

    Substituting flats for heels took some getting used to but I’m glad I’ve diversified my shoe collection for many reasons.  Flats are a favorite amongst many because they’re so low maintenance and easy to throw on but there are some guidelines to be aware of depending on the height of the shoe itself (ex: sandals, ankle booties, knee-high, etc.) and shape.  Once you have that figured out, you can concentrate on styling your outfit.

    DeziStyle

    For a casual chic daytime look, try pairing your flats with some distressed denim and fitted blouse or solid color tee.  I really like these Charles David slip on’s because the low cut elongates the leg and has a slimming effect.  This will also work well on heavier set women but beware if you already have long feet.  The space between the cuff of your pants and top of your shoe can exaggerate the length of your foot.

    DeziStyle

    Showing a little ankle is tasteful and sexy but be careful not to choose a pair of pants that have too wide of a leg or it will make your feet look oddly skinny.  For this reason, I love ankle skinny jeans.  And since bell bottoms are making a gradual comeback, might I recommend wearing them with some moccasins or thong sandals.

    DeziStyle

    If it’s too warm for pants, a skirt or pair of shorts could also work.  Long flowing skirts tend to look better with shoes that show a bit more toe so you’ll want to opt for a shorter skirt with closed toe flats.  Perhaps the exception for this would be a pair of low cut ankle booties…do they ever do any wrong?

    DeziStyle

    Pencil skirts and a loose top or blazer make a killer combination with flats for the work place or lunch with the girls.  On more casual days, a nice pair of sneakers can look quite nice with a pair of tailored pants.  Fortunately our weather in California can allow such an outfit, even in summer!

    DeziStyle

    Summer dresses just might have been invented for cute flats.  Free-flowing dresses with flats are a great match but remember, just like with the floor length skirts, open-toed shoes tend to pair better with longer cuts.

    DeziStyle

    Don’t be afraid to get wild with colors and cuts!  Sometimes just a simple pop of color on your shoes can really make a neutral outfit seem more fun and au courant, so get to shopping and tag your favorite looks with #DeziStyle on Instagram so I can see your creations!!

  • Travel Hacks: How to be Smart and Efficient

    Travel Hacks: How to be Smart and Efficient

    “If we were meant to stay in one place we’d have roots instead of feet”  Rachel Wolchin

    In the past, I found myself basing café choices on establishments that were openly willing to share their wifi with me.  Do you know what it feels like to be smack dab in the middle of a foreign city with no clue how to proceed or communicate?  Well, gone are the days where I travel without access to unlimited free data, thanks to T-Mobile.  Phone calls are pretty reasonable as well.  However, there are undoubtedly times when wifi just works better.  A quick way to access wifi is to utilize the Foursquare app to find passwords for the places around you.  Handy for travel abroad, low mobile signal or when you just can’t foot the bill.

    Bring a power strip so you can charge all of your devices at once.   (OK, and maybe his, too)

    Bring your own thermos and tea bags.  As a daily tea drinker and enthusiast, I find the tea offered on airplanes to be unappealing.  I also prefer to indulge in a bit more than a tiny styrofoam cup’s worth at a time.  That being said, my Thermos has traveled the world with me for many years and I’ve never regretted it.  It adds a touch of home to foreign hotel rooms and it’s ability to keep the contents either cool or hot for about 8 hours, makes it great for life on the go.

    dezistyle

    For those that travel for extended periods of time, you know that the hard plastic vitamin box either doesn’t last as many days as you need it to or is just an inconvenience to lug around.  I do, however use a vitamin box at home since I only need to refill it once a week.  Alternatively, it can be utilized to store smaller jewelry like earrings and delicate necklaces when traveling.  As far as my vitamins go, I store each daily dose in small jewelry sized resealable bags, or as some might know them by…dime bags.  You can find these at any craft or bead store.  Since I tend to dine out more frequently when traveling, its incredibly convenient to throw one in my day bag to take later on after I’ve eaten.   A little switcheroo that saves space and makes life a little easier.

    dezistyle

    Try sites like AirBnB, VRBO or Homeaway for a more intimate, unique way of experiencing a city.  Renting an entire apartment can cost you just as much, if not less, than a hotel and I find that it’s so much more rewarding.  You can pretty much guarantee that the owners will be more than accommodating and happy to dish out some advice for the best local digs.  It can also save you money depending on your length of stay, not to mention the ability to shop at local markets and prepare meals or snacks in a home environment.  Now that has a good feeling to it.

    Many of us run out to get manicures just before we jet set but as you know, they don’t usually last very long before chips occur.  I used to get acrylic nails many eons ago in order to keep my nails looking fresh throughout my travels but since I’m au naturel these days I’ve found two things that help me keep my nails in tip top shape.  First, ditch the square nail shape for a more rounded, almond shape.  This simple alteration in how I file my nails has improved overall sturdiness and they break or flake WAY less!  Secondly, try wearing a polish with glitter or sparkles.  There’s something about them that last longer.  I’m not saying you have to opt for anything crazy.  There are many beautiful, chic polishes out there that don’t scream Lisa Frank.  If you’re really not into it, just add a couple extra clear coats on top of your regular manicure for longer wear.

    dezistyle

    Most tv’s have a USB port now,  just in case you forgot the wall plug.  Take that, MacGyver.

    To save a map in the google maps app, type “ok maps” and it will save the shown area offline.  This has saved my butt on many occasions out of the country.

    If traveling with a partner, reserve the window and aisle seat on a flight.  Most people won’t want to reserve a middle seat, leaving you with a whole row.  Now you just have to decide who gets to lay down first.  Might I recommend rock, paper, scissors?

    If traveling to a tropical destination, or one where a pool may see its way into your future, having a sarong can come in handy.  I have a couple Sandcloud towels for that very reason.  Use it as a blanket or shawl on the plane, wear it as a sarong or use it as a cute towel for laying out.  There have been many occasions where my hotels didn’t offer towels for beach use or charged a fee, if so.  This takes care of that problem and doesn’t take up much space at all.

    dezistyle

    Bring an empty water bottle with you in your carry on bag so you can fill up at a water fountain instead of buying one inside the terminal.  Unless you actually like paying $5 for it…

    I haven’t tried this one yet but I’ve heard its quite a useful travel hack.  Use a binder clip to wrap and secure headphone wires so they remain untangled when not in use.  You can also use a binder clip to cover the head of your shaving razor to prevent accidental nicks.

    binder-clip

    My sunglasses cases have lasted much longer than the actual glasses themselves over the years, leaving me with plenty of cases to use for things like: carrying international plug converters, jewelry, charging cables, feminine products, hair ties and bobby pins…you name it.

    Stuff your shoes with your socks/underwear to save additional space.

    This is a MUST!  When searching for flights, tickets or any kind of booking online, ALWAYS enable your private browsing before you begin.  Bots track your searches and often times will raise the price to match sites you’ve already visited or will predict what you are capable of spending and adjust its price accordingly.

    Dryer sheets are great to throw in suitcases for a fresh scent and to keep clothes static free.  (I also heard a rumor that dryer sheets can help to repel bees, gnats and mosquitoes…)  Alternatively, you can throw a bar of hotel soap into your dirty clothes bag to keep the smell from penetrating your clean clothes.

    Pick your seat with confidence using seatguru.com.  You’ll be able to view current seating charts for all flights, review baggage requirements, make reviews, find out which rows may not recline or if there are seats with extra leg room.

    aa-boeing-737

    Download your airline’s app.  They will provide you with information and updates regarding your flight and usually offer paperless tickets as well.  Saving time AND the environment!

    Before you begin the packing process, go online and request free trial size samples from each of your favorite bath and beauty companies.  These are great for travel and don’t cost you a thing!

    Some airlines offer free stopover’s in their hub cities.  My very first trip to Dubai came about in this way.  Emirates flies to 140 destinations around the globe via Dubai and encourages you to spend a few days exploring the city!  This link for Emirates will take you to the page with the offer.  I might also add that Emirates is my favorite airline to travel on thus far.  This being just one of the perks.

    A multitude of credit card companies offer benefits for those who travel.  The Chase Sapphire Preferred Card waives foreign transaction fees, doles out reward points for travel and restaurants and gifts you with a 40,000 point signup bonus upon registering.  There is an annual fee but it’s much less than American Express and can save you a significant amount of dough when you redeem your points.

    To make fashion easy, pack clothes that fit in the same color schemes.  Neutrals and black are always a safe bet and are versatile for night and day.

    dezistyle

    Ladies, how many times have you gotten out your makeup bag after a long flight, only to discover that your favorite pressed powder has been broken into a thousand pieces?  A quick trick to help prevent such things from happening is to stick a cotton ball inside the case prior to flying.  That way if anything gets dropped or knocked around, your makeup will still be intact.

    Fun fact:  You are allowed to bring miniature bottles of alcohol on your flight.  I learned this a little late in the game but, better late than never!

    And lastly, keep a copy of your passport and credit cards in your email.   Hopefully you’ll never have to thank me for this one.

    Weekend Retreat: Palm Springs

    Palm Springs | California

    My cherry has been popped!  I finally visited Los Angeles’ hip little sister city of Palm Springs.  With as many vacation destinations as I’ve been to across California, Palm Springs had never been one of them.  An easy 2 hour road trip will transport you from the bustling beehive of LA to a flourishing desert oasis with resort style living.  Even with sweltering heat, its beautiful.   It was 109 degrees fahrenheit and understandably, off season.  Palm trees and lush succulents still stood tall as they outlined the streets just beneath the blue and taupe mountains.

    Just a few minutes outside of downtown sat our quaint, European style villa.  My partner in crime for the weekend, Holli, was just as eager to slip into a bikini as I was.  I managed to stuff my overnight bag to the brink of splitting zippers.  (Hey, a girl can never bring too many bikini options on vacation.  It’s a fact.)  So it’s no surprise that local fashion isn’t much of a priority in a small town where temperatures reach such highs…the enthusiastic ovation we got from a crowd of locals as we passed by proved that point.  However, notable fashion and travel photojournalists still flock to the area to capture the vintage essence of the city and mingle amongst celebrity festival goers at the many events thrown throughout the year.

    Here are a few fun facts and things you can anticipate when traveling to this modern meets mid-century city.

    • Nicknamed the Golf Capital of the World – The 100th course was opened in 2001
    • The city hosts an array of festivals and events
    • Unique landscaping and mid-century modern architecture
    • Wet’nWild water park helps to battle the hottest days
    • The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway gives you a 12 minute long birds eye view of the city
    • It’s going to be hot!  Bring light clothing, bikinis, sunnies, a hat and plenty of sunblock.
    • Downtown has a number of great restaurants to choose from
    • Don’t judge a book by its cover.  Some of the coolest places have the most drab facades.
    • Kings Highway and The Amigo Room (Ace Hotel) whips up a mean brunch
    • Casinos nearby
    • Stop in Cabazon to shop at the outlets or snap a pic with the giant California Dinosaurs (as seen in Peewee’s Big Adventure).

    Rosenthal Wines

    Malibu, CA

    Ever find yourself wondering what to do on a casual Saturday afternoon in Los Angeles or feel the need for a spontaneous day trip?  I found this little gem tucked away in Malibu just across from the beach.  You may have driven past it several times on the PCH without notice but the giant sized table and chairs out front are kind of hard to miss.

    Rosenthal is the spot to be, especially on weekends, offering live music, wine by the bottle or glass, a gourmet food truck and a buzzing atmosphere boasting fresh ocean air.  The vibe is laid back but has a great energy.  I love how open they are to bringing outside food.  Most guests bring picnic baskets of goodies to indulge in but I’m a big fan of the Azteca food truck that sets up shop on the property.  Table space was limited but that didn’t stop us from claiming a small patch of grass and soaking up the sun with a chilled bottle of rosé.  I even made friends with a sweet service dog named Silvia that helps deaf children when not lounging at the wine estate.  Food, music, sun and furry friends…Not a bad way to kick off the first day of summer.

    Tee by Junk Food | Denim by Cotton On | Boots by Michael Kors

    Looking back, there were a lot of embarrassing trends from the 90’s but all those tacky butterfly clips and bucket hats hold a special place in my heart.  I’ve since given up most of my  pre-00’s era accoutrements but I will always be a fan of chokers and graphic tee’s.  Junk Food came about in the late 90’s and continues to make comfy tops with wit.  I say, when in doubt, a good pair of denim & a tee are always a solid choice…just don’t plan on wearing a top like this one without a bit of confidence and a good sense of humor.

    Memorial Day weekend was one of maxin’ and relaxin’ at the beautiful Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes.  Luckily, the ominous weather in the days leading up to the famed 3 day weekend dissipated into crystal blue skies and balmy weather.  I was mostly excited to just lounge around in my bikini and order food by the pool but it’s in my nature to explore and that’s exactly what I did.

    Just a stroll away are some impressive cliffs and rocky shorelines.  If you follow my stories on Snapchat, you explored a small cave with me that was only accessible by climbing down a steep rockfall and timing your leap onto a patch of wet sand with the rolling waves…try doing that in a bikini!  I happened to catch the eye of a few spectators on the cliffs, apparently inspiring two younger boys to follow suit into the cave and ask me to take a photo with them.  I had to admire their initiative.

    On the other side of the resort, far from the pools and restaurants, a precipitous pathway led to yet another beach, the shore made up of large weathered rocks.  This one was more secluded and quite a trek to get down to the bottom but well worth it.  If you want to feel like you’ve stumbled across a small European enclave, Pescadero Trail is your spot.  I couldn’t pull myself away until the sun had already set itself behind the lonely lighthouse on the cliffs and it was a race against the remaining light to reach the top.  Pastel clouds swallowed the sun like a delicate shell just as I made it back to the resort, forcing me to retire from my adventures for the day and hang my bikini up to dry for the following day’s shenanigans.

    Anyways, since my favorite season is just around the bend and many more trips are to follow, I’ve been actively on the hunt for some new summer suits.  I just adore the tropical vibe of Lychee swimwear and the navy birds of paradise print couldn’t have been more appropriate for my mini vacay.  With my choice of pool, spa, beach and jacuzzi, I pretty much lived in this bikini all weekend long.  In fact, its taken me longer this past week to adjust back into the real world than some of my international travels have.  I guess that means it was a successful getaway.  Don’t get me wrong though, I’m already plotting the next one and you’d better believe it involves a bikini or two!

  • Newlyweds Négligée

    Newlyweds Négligée

    Perhaps I’ve started wedding planning a bit backwards.  I have yet to find a venue (step #1) but somehow I’ve found myself browsing the bridal lingerie section of a multitude of online shops.

    This year seems to be filling up with weddings rather quickly and with so many of my girlfriends about to take the plunge, why not share my finds.  What I’ve come to realize with wedding planning is how useful blogs are and I can’t begin to express my gratitude for the women out there who have made my life a little easier by sharing your finds and DIY’s with the rest of us.  The search can be monotonous and time is valuable, so here is a compiled list of my favorite newlywed négligées available online now and all under $250.

    The Lila Lace Robe from BHLDN is absolutely stunning.  This couldn’t be more perfect for the classic bride who still wants to feel like one, long after her wedding day.  The delicately draping chiffon and corset-like fashion in which you fasten the robe together hints a naughty but nice appeal.  Perhaps it’s my Indian background that makes me like the aesthetic influence of this robe so much but I really feel it’s design transcends culture and beautifully highlights the femininity of a woman.

    vs

    How pretty is this Ruffle Lace Teddy by Victoria’s Secret?  A teddy for those that are comfortable with something a little more risqué, this high cut panty line accentuates your legs, making them seem long and svelte.  The lacework is just darling and I don’t even hate that nude ruffle.  Overall, it’s a classy little number that’s sure to get more than two thumbs up.

    vs

    Babydoll’s aren’t usually my first choice but this Pleated Babydoll from Victoria’s Secret in soft rose has me rethinking that.  Perfect for the blushing bride.  *Also available in other colors

    cosabellaThis Cosabella Vittoria Teddy is similar in cut to the VS one above, but carries a heavier price tag.  Again, I love the lace detail.  It’s so simple and ladylike.  And why not opt for black?  Not all bridal lingerie has to be whites and pastels.

    On the complete opposite end of the spectrum is this Flora Nikrooz Peachblossom Gown from Anthropologie and it’s flowing feminine fit is beautiful on any body type.

    Definitely in love with this little number by Agent Provocateur.  The strategically placed lace patterns make this slip unequivocally daring and sexy.  *Black is also an available option.

    For the girl who wants something simple and flirty.  The Hanky Panky set by Journelle includes this peek-a-boo lace front tie bralette and matching panty.

    Forplay is known to carry a large selection of pretty racy lingerie so I was surprised to see this more conservative 3 piece chiffon sleep shirt set.  I actually find it effortlessly beautiful and alluring.

    Last but certainly not least, I love this Casablanca lace side chemise by In Bloom.  So elegant and tastful.  Just gorgeous.

    10 Things to Know About Me featuring Hart Denim Overalls

    Overalls by Hart Denim | Booties by Michael Kors

    I realize that many of you may not know very much about me.  Besides my fashion and travel addiction, the rest is up for question.  Any of you avid readers might be able to point out my affection for versatile clothing and accessories, but since I don’t talk a lot about the personal details of life in my blogs, I’ve decided to share 10 things about me you may not know featuring my favorite Michael Kors booties and new denim overalls.   So without further adieu, let’s get started!

     1.  Current residence:  Marina del Rey, California!  I love living on the west side.  I lived in Studio City prior to MDR but knew it was time to move when I was driving to the beach every other day.  I really enjoy being by the water and the easy access I have to the beach by bicycle/rollerblades is unbeatable.

    DeziStyle

    2.  You read #1 correctly.  I rollerblade and I’m damn proud of it.  You can catch me on the Venice boardwalk all summer long.  All I’m missing is a sweet fanny pack…  DeziStyle

    3.  I have two children:  Nike and Rufio.  They’re my little feline fur babies.  I have always been an animal lover but I can seriously appreciate the independence and self-sufficiency cats possess.  Both were adopted from the humane society, as most all of my pets usually are.      DeziStyle

    4.  If I could live somewhere besides LA, I’d chose Spain.  Despite my urges to travel to new places, I find myself always coming back.  There’s something about Barcelona that really strikes a chord with me.  I’m fascinated by the unique architectural influence Gaudi has left throughout the city and the sprawling sand beaches call my name on a warm and sunny day.  Truthfully, my favorite part about Spain is the food.  I could go on and on about it but then I’d never get to #5.DeziStyle

    5.  I’m a mix of Swedish and West Indian.  So yes, I love both Swedish pancakes and spicy foods.  DeziStyle

    6.  My favorite shows are Breaking Bad (best show ever, ever!), VICE, Real Time with Bill Maher, The Daily Show, Game of Thrones, Newsroom, American Horror Story and any crime solving show.DeziStyle

    7.  I was a bit of a tomboy growing up…still kinda am at heart.  My best friends were always boys and my favorite past times were climbing trees and catching lizards and bugs.  I also played sports all throughout my youth – Basketball, track, cheerleading, cross country, volleyball…and I was MVP for most, ahem.  DeziStyle

    8.  I’m engaged!  I have the most incredible, funny, loving, loyal man in my life and his name is Richie Chance.  He’s what you would call a man’s man.  We’ve been together for over 8 years and were engaged on January 31, 2013.  Just don’t ask about a wedding date yet…that’s still a work in progress but needless to say, I can’t wait to be Mrs. Chance.  🙂    DeziStyle9.    I do my own hair and makeup on a lot of shoots.  Don’t get me wrong, I love to just show up and sip coffee while I get beautified but I also like to make sure I’ll be comfortable in my own skin.  Being around, or the canvas of, a myriad of hair and makeup artists my whole life has taught me all of what I know and I am forever grateful.

    DeziStyle10.  Modeling has been a part of my life since I was 3 years old, but I’ve held many other jobs throughout the years including: arcade attendant, waitress, host, assistant at a law firm, MC, retail clerk, fitness representative, luxury real estate rental agent, customized ceramic painter and probably a couple other odd end jobs that weren’t significant enough to remember.  One thing has always been consistent though, and that’s my involvement in arts and entertainment.  This is a space where I feel most comfortable and knowledgable but I also make it a point to try new things outside of my comfort zone quite often.  You never know where it can take you or how it will inspire you!
