24 Hours in Ojai | What to do, Eat, & Where to Sleep

You’ve got 24 hours in Ojai and you’ve gotta make it count.  What do you do?  Ojai seems to be one of the most under-the-radar California hotspots.  At only about 80 miles from L.A., it feels more like 800 miles away.  I’m a firm believer that sometimes you just need to ditch the big city and decompress…even if only for 24 hours.

    What to do

    Bart’s Books

Bart’s Books came about as Richard Bartinsdale’s collection of books grew so massive, he constructed a series of shelves along the sidewalk to share his passion with the community, leaving only a tin can out in lieu of a cash register.  Since then, he’s cycled through more than a million books.  Today, Bart’s Books is recognized as the largest independently owned outdoor bookstore in the USA.

    Meditation Mount

Whether you come for the view or seek solace on the lawn, this non-profit organization has been dedicated to empowering & enlightening individuals with creative meditation, community based events & inspirational programs since it’s opening in 1971.

    DSC03170 (1)

My limited time in town only permitted me to explore the property at midday but many love to come for the well-known pink sunsets of Ojai as well.  As you enter the Peace Portal (made from 1,200 year old reclaimed Douglas fir), it is intended for you to feel a sense of energetic transformation and a sense of new possibilities.

You’re free to roam about.  Stroll the gardens, do yoga on the lawn, pop by the koi pond or visit the meditation room.

    Bookends Bookstore

It’s apparent that the community of Ojai really knows how to take things slow and enjoy the company of a good book.  Bookends (on the opposite end of town from Bart’s Books), takes a different approach to your common bookstore.  On the property sits this 1960’s Airstream trailer and old, renovated church, both filled with…you guessed it, books.  Find one you like and kick back under the shade of the trees while you sip a fresh brewed coffee from next door.

    Catch a Sunset

There are a couple spots to catch a great sunset in Ojai.  Aside from Meditation Mount there are hiking trails that can set you up for a photo-worthy golden hour.

    Where to Eat

    The Farmer and the Cook

After the drive in, you may have a hankering for a snack.  Chances are that your hotel check in may not be until 3 or 4pm so why not use that as a great excuse to pop in for your first treat at The Farmer and the Cook.

    Azu Mediterranean Restaurant

Mediterranean food is some of my favorite in the world so I had to try Azu.  They have a regular dining area and a cozy, dimly lit bar where Richie and I shacked up for dinner.  It was too hard to decide on one thing so we ordered a handful of tapas.  See our favorites below.

Let me just stress that Ojai is still a small city.  When you’re coming from a place like Los Angeles, you’re used to restaurants catering to a late night crowd, but many places in Ojai close on the early side so always make sure you check ahead of time so you don’t miss out on the places you want to try.

    Knead Baking Company

Known for their in-house, freshly baked goods and artisan crafted breakfast & lunch specials, Knead bakery sits tucked away just off east Ojai Avenue.  This family owned and operated joint features their own specialty “Knead Bread” on the weekends, made only from unbleached, organic flour, whole grains, extra virgin olive oil, kosher salt  + fresh herbs.  (sigh) Can you smell it?

    Ojai Tortilla House

This was by far my favorite meal of the whole trip.  Surprisingly it was not only the most delicious and authentic, but also the most inexpensive.  What a pleasant surprise indeed.  As many establishments seem to be in Ojai, this restaurant is also family owned and operated, mom is even seen making fresh rosemary tortillas behind the counter.

    DeziStyle Ojai

It may look like any other street taco, but these pollo tacos were definitely anything but average.   The slaw was on point, the fresh salsa was kickin’ and the flavor was finger-licking good! The hint of rosemary in the soft, warm tortillas was definitely a nice touch, too. I opted for the spiciest salsa and boy did I get it.  Luckily I had this tall refreshing watermelon agua fresca to wash it all down.

For those seeking a little more luxury, the Ojai Valley Inn & Spa is where you want to be.  It too has recently undergone some upgrades but has managed to maintain an authentic feeling stemming from it’s origins in 1923.

8 Unique Ways for the Offbeat Traveler to Experience Palm Springs

Whether you’ve come to Palm Springs to relax and unwind or get your groove on, there’s a little something for everyone.   Since my first time in this sunny little city about a year and a half ago, I’ve been back for more of the good life a handful of times. As each trip comes and goes, I seem to uncover new places that are truly unique to Palm Springs.

At first glance Palm Springs may seem like its not much more than an infinite selection of golf courses (about 124) and midcentury modern architected neighborhoods sprawled along the Great Desert Basin.  In all actuality, after a myriad of trips, I can confidently say that if you’re bored in Palm Springs, you haven’t truly explored it.  The city itself is rather quaint in size compared to it’s big sister, Los Angeles, but what I’ve discovered is that to really experience the best of what it has to offer, you’ve gotta dig beneath the surface just a bit.

    DeziStyle Palm Springs

“I really regret that trip!” …Said no one ever.

    Aerial Tramway

I’m a sucker for perspective and in Palm Springs, there’s no better vantage point than from the worlds largest rotating aerial tramway. The 8,500 foot ride up will cost you $21.95 but if you plan it right, you can make the most out of your excursion by including a day hike through the trails beginning at the tram drop off or camp at one of their six primitive campgrounds in the Mount San Jacinto State Park and Wilderness area. There is a restaurant and bar situated at the top for those that prefer to be wined and dined, otherwise it’s recommended to bring your own supply of water and snacks.

    Moorten Botanical Garden and Cactarium

This botanical garden or “cactarium” as the Moorten family refers to it as, is tucked away just off the main road in town. Succulents are a defining design feature seen all throughout Palm Springs and may be just as indicative to where you are as the giant windmills and palm trees. The property boasts thousands of plants and many different varietals of cacti meticulously scattered along a trail and inside their greenhouse. On the back of the lot, you’ll find the Moorten’s family home, a beautiful Spanish style hacienda, originally built in 1929 for renowned photographer, Stephen Willard. Stephen’s photographs of Palm Springs in the early 30’s are said to have been an influential part of putting this burgeoning city on the map.  Not long after that, Cactus Slim, the founder of Moorten’s Botanical Garden and Cactarium, opened up shop in 1938 and it still remains a family owned and operated business to this day. Perhaps a visit here isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but one can certainly appreciate the history and unique beauty this place has to offer.  Next time you’re in Palm Springs, swing by and say hello to Clark, he’ll be happy to see to it that you have a pleasant visit, just tell him Desirée sent you.

    Wet ‘n Wild

Who says water parks are only for kids?! When temperatures soar in Palm Springs, you’ll realize there’s no better place to be than Wet ‘n Wild if you’re looking for some bikini clad adventure. The park isn’t as big as some of the other water parks I’ve been to in Florida but it surely has all you could need – slides, tide pools, lazy river, cabanas and a fully stocked bar.

    San Gorgonio Pass Windmills

The Palm Springs windmills are iconic. Built in the early 1980’s, they have become the landmarks that roadtrippers like myself look upon with eager eyes as we enter the city. The windmills stand at 150 feet tall, methodically spinning as if waving hello to all who have come to visit. These make for great photo ops, especially during sunrise or sunset.  For those looking to take an official tour of the windmills, you can find tickets here, however, I’ve found that it’s quite easy to get beautiful pictures, even from the road.

Trendy bites at Kings Highway Diner at the Ace Hotel & Swim Club

The Ace Hotel is a popular destination in Palm Springs for hip travelers and photographers alike. This quirky diner, once a neighborhood Denny’s, is one of my favorites in town for brunch. Anyone who’s been here and appreciates a good avocado & egg toast breakfast will know what I mean.  Fresh, locally sourced produce make this the perfect pit stop for some seasonal nosh and the décor definitely adds to the overall ambiance.

  • Happy 2 Year Anniversary: Top 10 Inspiring Moments Recap

Happy 2 Year Anniversary: Top 10 Inspiring Moments Recap

    ~

My baby’s growing up!  It’s hard to believe it’s been 2 years since the DeziStyle blog was born.  Long before DeziStyle was a twinkle in my eye, I had already been traveling the world, hosting, modeling, writing and doing my best to share all that I had learned and acquired with others through any medium.  I’ve been known to be somewhat of a travel guru amongst family and friends for quite some time so it feels wonderful to also have had the opportunity to welcome the questions, comments and discussions of this extended online family through DeziStyle over these last two years.  To be candid, the blog began purely as an altruistic passion project that sprouted into something much deeper and more meaningful as time went on.  It’s safe to say that this blog has come to play a significant role in my life and really pave the way for me to express myself, my lifestyle, the way I travel and most importantly, inspire others to be courageous and live life adventurously.

    DeziStyle Anniversary

Admittedly I am still learning and evolving as I go, fully aware that I will always have more room for growth but I must say, I am proud of all that has been accomplished thus far.  Travel blogging (or any blogging for that matter) is a time consuming, multidimensional undertaking that requires much dedication, enthusiasm, creativity, and even business acumen, because let’s face it, if you weren’t trying to get readers to your blog, you might as well have just written in your diary.  At times it can be a thankless job, and until you reach a certain level, an unpaid one, too.  But that’s not why I do it.  Hearing stories of how you inspired someone’s trip, helped them travel more efficiently or changed their perspective is one of the sweetest rewards a blogger can a receive.  For the past two years, as DeziStyle has burgeoned from it’s humble beginnings, its the readers and the community of people who share in this addictive culture of wanderlust that have truly made this experience one worth working for.

There have been so many great trips and unforgettable moments in 24 months (and 115 posts) that it’s hard to choose which stand out over the others but lo and behold, I have narrowed it down to my top ten moments and posts, as any good blogger would do.  These destinations or experiences have lent a hand in shaping the person I am and have inspired some of my favorite blogs to date.  So here’s to yet another venturesome year of trips, tips and unprecedented fun.  Thank you so much for taking the time to come along on this journey.  Our goal is simply to help more people realize how incredible this planet is and encourage them to experience more of it.  You can help by sharing our posts with your friends and subscribing to the site so new articles are sent directly to your inbox (no spam mail, pinky swear).  I look forward to bringing you the best of what the world has to offer as we embark on our third year as your one-stop-shop for adventure, culture and unique experiences.  Cheers!

    6.  15 Weekend Getaways from LA for the Roadtrip Junkie.

There are quite a few posts dedicated to Los Angeles.  You might say it’s because that’s my home, and you would be right.  But, L.A. is also the perfect jump off hub for travels near or far.  I’ve lived in this eccentric city for over a decade now and I’ve yet to discover all the adventures that lie just beyond.  With so much to see and so little time, I’ve compiled my favorite road trip destinations from LA into a comprehensive list.  Prepare to extend your bucket list.

    5.  The Best Ways to Experience Belize in your Bikini

Belize is one of those semi-obscure places that does not get the attention it rightfully deserves.  For being such a small chunk of paradise, there’s much to do so long as you’ve got a bikini to throw on and a thirst for some excellent excursions (and perhaps a piña colada or two).

    4.  22 Unique Activities You Don’t Want to Miss While You’re in Costa Rica

So nice, I went there twice.  I’ll be honest, the first time I went I dealt with a number or unfortunate experiences throughout that trip that left me feeling less than enthused when I was set to return for a girls trip.  I’m grateful to have had that opportunity to re-experience such a beautiful country and really gain a true appreciation for it.  Costa Rica is chock full of activities, nature and plenty of stunning sunsets; you need not look far.

    3.  Dune Bashing in Dubai & The Miracle Gardens

I’m a bit stunned when people express their uneasiness or apathy for visiting Dubai.  It happens to be a remarkable place to experience world class accommodations, clubs, restaurants, and all around unique experiences.  During my last visit I tried dune bashing for my first time.  Imagine surfing on sand…in a car.  The Miracle Gardens stirred up a little less adrenaline but were impressive nonetheless.  Dubai is constantly outdoing itself and teeming with new happenings which is why this Emirate is #3 on my list.

    1.  Travel Diary: Backpacking the Eastern Sierra Nevada Wilderness

The #1 most inspiring moment for me personally, was this 5 day thru-hike I did with my brother and my husband in Inyo National Forest this July.  If you read the story already, you know what an uphill battle it was (literally).  Trekking through backcountry was such a raw, visceral side of travel and how we experience nature in its truest form.  Within the mountains, I felt transported to a place that seemed much further than the mere 300 or so miles away from home.  Perhaps that’s what fueled my motivation to climb higher and push further, both mentally and physically.  This was the kind of trip that changes you in ways you weren’t expecting and isn’t that what we tend to seek most in our travels? …to be effected?

This blog is dedicated to my husband Richie for pushing me to take that initial leap and share my voice and passion for travel with others –and for helping me create a beautiful illustration of it with his artistic eye and photography skills.  Thank you for being the bestest travel buddy ever!

  • 7 Things You Ought to Know About the Siberia Creek Trail

7 Things You Ought to Know About the Siberia Creek Trail

    Big Bear | CA

    Level:  Easy to Difficult

    Length: 14+ miles roundtrip

Best time to go: March to November

Where to park: Champion Lodgepole Pine

Hiking has definitely been a recurring theme for me this summer and I just can’t seem to get enough.  With so many incredible trails in California, it’s hard not to feel the urge to explore them all!  After all, many of them boast serene nature, spectacular views and adventurous twists and turns.  There are a network of trails in the Big Bear area but for this particular hike, my friends and I chose to explore the Siberia Creek Trail.  At the bottom, awaits Bear Creek drainage and the Siberia Creek Campground for those brave enough to get there.

I would recommend this trail to anyone who is up for some scenic landscape and a great workout.  Maintenance on the path has not been maintained for some time so it can get a little hairy in some parts but it’s gorgeous nonetheless.  Before you decide to venture off into the Siberian Creek Trail, here are some things you should know, just for good measure.

    DeziStyle Siberia Creek Trail

    DeziStyle Siberia Creek Trail

    1.  The trail is 7 miles one way.  This means if you’re adamant about reaching the creek, you should be prepared for a strenuous day of hiking, especially back uphill.  Bring plenty of water, nutritious snacks and some bug spray (it gets buggier the lower you descend).  Also, be sure to notify someone of where you will be and when you plan on returning.  It can help to leave that information, along with phone number of an emergency contact on your dashboard as well.

    DeziStyle Siberia Creek Trail

DeziStyle Siberia Creek TrailDeziStyle Siberia Creek Trail

    2.  This trail is not maintained by the national forest service which means – be aware that some parts of the trail have been wiped out or overgrown.  There are many steep cliffs and narrow pathways as well as large bramble-like bushes.

DeziStyle Siberia Creek TrailDeziStyle Siberia Creek TrailDeziStyle Siberia Creek Trail

    3.  My hiking buddy, who also happens to be an exquisite chef, taught me a little something about foraging in this part of the forest.  Although there is not much edible (or appetizing) plant life in this particular area, we did stumble across some wild redcurrant berries.  If you see these on your trek, feel free to treat yourself to a deliciously tart afternoon snack, but you must absolutely be certain they are redcurrant berries and keep an eye out for hungry bears who may also feel up for a nibble.  DeziStyle Siberia Creek TrailDeziStyle Siberia Creek TrailDeziStyle Siberia Creek Trail

*Don’t forget to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

    DeziStyle Siberia Creek Trail

    4.  Because there is a 3,000 foot elevation change throughout this hike and temperamental weather, it’s best to go into this trek with the appropriate gear. Loose rocks and unkempt paths can lead to easy injuries so although hiking boots may not be 100% necessary, I wouldn’t want to do it without mine.

Additionally, a rain jacket is good to have if you don’t like getting caught up in an afternoon shower.  We got sprinkled on and it felt quite rejuvenating, however, if you plan on bringing any camera equipment along, that rain jacket could be what saves your electronics from any water damage.

    DeziStyle Siberia Creek Trail

    5.  Surprisingly, pine trees and cones are also edible and can be prepared in a few different ways from pine needle tea (high in vitamin C), to eating the pine seeds raw or roasted, frying or boiling pine tree bark or making pine flour from the small male pine cones.  Great to know in case a survival situation should arise.  Who knew pine trees were so culinarily diverse!

    DeziStyle Siberia Creek Trail

    6.  The Siberian Creek trail isn’t just for hikers, you just might run into bikers, horseback riders and dogs, too.  And for my yogi’s out there, the trail offers a couple great pitstops for stretching, yoga and meditation as well.

DeziStyle Siberia Creek TrailDeziStyle Siberia Creek Trail

    7.  If you happen to be out on an unclouded day, there’s a good chance you’ll be able to see some pretty awesome panoramas of Saddleback Mountain and Mount Palomar.  Rumor has it you can even see the ocean on really clear days, but that may be a little far fetched.  Either way, the landscape here is lush and the views are breathtaking.

  • Things to Consider When you Book a Seat on Your Next Flight

Things to Consider When you Book a Seat on Your Next Flight

    Ronald Sarayudej

On my most recent flight, it really dawned on me just how often I go down a checklist of preferences when picking a seat.  There is much research and scrutiny that goes into choosing a flight and that’s to be expected, but what I’ve realized is that snagging a great seat is a feat of its own.  It’s getting more difficult to select a seat without paying and sometimes they don’t offer online seating charts at all!  Luckily there are ways around almost everything these days. Here is the criteria that I try to consider with each flight to make the most informed decision and have a pleasant experience.  It may seem like a lot to assess but the more often you use these methods in your selections, the more routine it will become.

    • The first place I look on a seating chart is the front of the aircraft.  I am always determined to sit as close to the front as possible, as long as it’s not in front of an exit row.  I prefer sitting closer because it’s easier to board and de-board the plane which gets you through customs or to baggage claim quickly before the crowd.  It also tends to be convenient for access to the restrooms, both on board and once you de-plane.
    • As mentioned above, I try to avoid the rows in front of the exit rows.  For safety reasons, many, if not all, flights do not have reclining seats in this row and can make for a pretty uncomfortable flight, especially when the person in front of you decides to recline into your limited space.  *Side note, Spirit & Allegiant Airlines do NOT have any reclining seats.
    • On the contrary, you may want to aim for an exit row so you’re guaranteed to keep the space in front of you open.  Keep in mind the exit rows are said to have more narrow seats and you can’t keep your personal items stored under the seat in front of you, but it all depends on what trade offs are worthwhile to you.
    • When traveling with a partner, and you’re not expecting it to be a full flight, chose an aisle and window seat wherever there is a middle seat also available.  Chances are you’ll end up with the entire row to yourselves.
    • For more legroom, go for the first row in economy.  These usually carry a little bit heavier of a price tag when reserving a seat or are held for frequent flier upgrades, but if you’re willing to take a gamble on waiting until the last minute for a seat assignment, you may be able to score a bulkhead seat at no charge at all.  I would recommend evaluating the passengers waiting to get onto your flight, too.  If someone is traveling with a baby or small child, there is a strong chance they’ll be sitting in bulkhead as well.  If the coast seems clear, check in with someone who works at the airline once you’re at your gate to see if you can switch your seats.
    • Another row you’ll want to avoid at all cost is the last row on the plane.  Not only do the seats not recline and you’ll be last off the plane, but you’re in position to become very well acquainted with the smells and sounds of the restroom.  This is also the area that people tend to hover around while they wait for the toilet or stretch their legs.  This happens to be the bumpiest and nosiest part of the airplane.  And if you thought it couldn’t get any worse than the last row, the cherry on top is getting the aisle seat in that last row.  It’s nearly impossible to sit in it and not have your elbows knocked up or your space encroached upon.  The only true benefit I could see out of this row is if you need to use the restroom frequently, otherwise, STAY AWAY!
    • USB and power outlets are like hidden treasures in some planes.  Not every seat has these features.  Personally, I’ve mostly only seen them under the seat of the middle passenger, unless the TV monitors have a port on them.  If the airlines do not provide this information, try a site like Seat Guru or  Seat Plans.
    • Seats near the galley can either work in your favor or be your worst nightmare.  If you’re on a day flight, this could mean easy access to service and refreshments.  However, on an evening flight, it can be noisy and very active or bright.
    • Keep in mind, the front of the plane will be less noisy since it sits in front of the engines, but it’s also supposed to be statistically safer to sit in the back third of the plane in the event of a crash.
    • Picking a window seat for an overnight flight means you can sleep uninterrupted by fellow travelers and use the window shade as a head rest.  If you are taller though, this seat can actually make you feel more claustrophobic because of the curvature of the walls.
    • Choosing an aisle seat will allow you easy access to restrooms and getting off the plane, however it can be more difficult to rest when people are constantly walking by or needing to get past you to use the toilet.
    • Don’t be afraid to use apps!  There are a lot of tools out there to help facilitate the process and many have free versions available so why not utilize them.

One of the most exciting moments in preparing for a trip is picking out your backpack.  For some, you’ve already experienced the advantage of ditching the suitcase for a more useful tool such as the backpack, but for others, you may be wondering what the perks really are.  For one, it leaves you much more mobile and handsfree.  If you are an adventurous wanderluster like myself, having a backpack is not only more simple and stress free, but you’re also able to roam around unencumbered.  Many small towns or third world countries do not have the smooth, paved sidewalks you may be used to rolling your suitcase on back home so to avoid being that clumsy tourist trying to lug your suitcase over cobblestones or dirt roads, it is wise to opt for something as uncomplicated as a backpack.

The other concern many have is space.  It’s true, you’ll likely have less space than a big boxy suitcase but in reality, if you know how to pack efficiently and choose versatile clothing options, you’ll still be able to bring everything you need, regardless if you’re planning on traveling for 2 weeks or 2 months.  It is definitely a transition that can take some practice and getting used to, especially for the ladies that love fashion/shoes (again, guilty as charged), but what you’ll find is that when you can simplify your material items, you tend to focus more on the actual experiences you are there to have.

Your backpack becomes a part of you throughout your travels and will likely be with you for many years to come, so it is crucial to not only choose one that suits your upcoming itinerary, but fits your body correctly.  Buying a quality one can be a little pricy but just think of it as an investment into your future comfort and convenience, two things we can all use more of when on the road.  Luckily, there are a lot of options out there, you just need to know what factors to look for when determining which will become your new travel partner.  So, without further adieu, here are the most important things you need to know about when purchasing that pack.

    DeziStyle Backpack Guide

    • Size matters!  This is the most important detail in the entire process and will heavily influence how comfortable you are throughout your travels.  Depending on your torso length, you’ll want to make sure the backpack you choose, fits on your waist/hips correctly.  Most of the weight in your backpack will rest evenly on your hips, easing up tension on your shoulders and back.  I would highly recommend you have a knowledgeable sales rep at a reputable recreational equipment store take your measurements for you.  They have a simple tool that will measure the distance between the top of your hip bone and your C7 vertebrae so you can choose a backpack that fits your frame best.  You’ll also want to be sure your bag isn’t too tall or wide, making it more difficult to see around you or take as a carry on item if need be. (Be sure to check airline regulations for current weight or dimension limits.)DeziStyle Backpack Guide
    • Functionality is key.  You want to make sure your bag offers additional exterior compartments for organizing and storing items.  The outside of the backpack should have at least a few loops to hang things from and perhaps even a holster for a water bottle.  It’s also very handy to have a backpack that offers multiple access points to the main compartment.  Trust me, when all your personal items are condensed into this small space, you’ll be glad to be able to get in and search for something particular through other portals.
    • Water resistant material is a must.  I wouldn’t worry about a water-proof backpack unless the conditions of where you’re going will absolutely require that.  Even with a water resistant backpack, I’ve made it through rainstorms walking to train stations with a cheap poncho and trekking through humid jungles without a bit of my clothes or personal items scathed.  Inevitably there will be a time when your backpack comes into contact with a liquid of some sort (hopefully just water) but you’ll want to make sure it doesn’t soak through or cause mildew so keep your eye out for resistant material when choosing a bag.   DeziStyle Backpack Guide
    • Padded support will save you from pain.  Make sure your backpack has contoured back and spine support.  Additionally, padded shoulder and hip straps are very necessary.  It’ll make a big difference in your comfort levels, especially on longer trips.  The padding on the back should also put some space between your back and the pad, allowing for air flow.  If you’re trying on backpacks in-store, put one on and have a rep add some weight bags to it.  Any legit recreation equipment store should have them.  Walk around the store and get a feel for it.
    • No need to spend an arm and a leg.  There are plenty of quality backpacks on the market for around $100 or so.  Search for coupons online, outlets or upcoming in-store sales for additional savings.  R.E.I. has an online outlet as well as periodic “garage sales”.
    • Frame or no frame?  Internal frames are always going to be better that any external ones.  If your backpack is small enough, it may not require one, however, if it does, internal frames tend to be more comfortable, lightweight and durable.
    • Extra bells and whistles.  Ok, maybe not actual bells or whistles, but there are definitely some additional features that surely add the cherry on top when picking the perfect backpack.  Such features might include but are not limited to: zippered hip pockets for easy access items, attached lightweight day bag, rain poncho, luggage transport cover and so on.  Select bags may also offer independently adjustable shoulder straps.  These components may not be necessary but they are totally helpful to have if you can.DeziStyle Backpack Guide

There are many backpacks out there and they are certainly not created equal, so do your due diligence and research before you shop.  Remember, the first step is knowing your correct size and from there, it’s like building your perfect pack piece by piece.  Putting your comfort and convenience before aesthetic preferences and even price will help to ensure you have an all around better experience with a backpack that will last you many more adventures.

  • 9 Reasons You Will Want to Spend the Day in Half Moon Bay | Riviera Maya

9 Reasons You Will Want to Spend the Day in Half Moon Bay | Riviera Maya

Half Moon Bay is situated along the Yucatan’s Riviera Maya.  If you haven’t heard of it before, chances are it’s because it tends to get over shadowed by the neighboring towns of Tulum or Playa del Carmen.  Granted, Half Moon Bay can easily remain off the radar for the mainstream traveler but, for those seeking something off the beaten path and not oversaturated with tourists, you may want to schedule a stop over here.  Why wouldn’t you want to spend the day in a town where “no shoes required” is their local mantra?

    1.  Pick up a bicycle & cruise the sleepy town of Half Moon Bay and Akumal.  It’s a healthier (and cheaper) alternative to renting a golf cart and is a great way to see the rest of the area.

    DeziStyle

    2.  Have a long lunch at La Buena Vida.  If you’re not careful, you may end up spending the entire day here!  Although there are a couple beachside restaurants in Half Moon Bay, this place is by far one of the best.

    DeziStyle

Grab a swing at the bar, dig your toes into the sand, and enjoy a fresh juice or a frosty cocktail with a view of the Bay.  This place has a daily happy hour and has been known to be the hub of the local nightlife scene as well.

    DeziStyle

    3.  Get some R&R.  The strips of beach aren’t very wide here but there are plenty of beach chairs and hammocks awaiting your arrival.  It’s an incredibly relaxing atmosphere so don’t forget your sunnies and a good book.

    DeziStyle

The sand bar allows you to walk pretty far out without getting too deep.

    DeziStyle

No shortage of vitamin D in Half Moon Bay!

    DeziStyle

Shout out to O2 Denim for these cute fringed, high waisted shorts.  They have been put to serious use already!DeziStyle

    4.  Share a view with the birds.  Looking for a little perspective?  Climb the miradors (“crows nests”) and take pleasure in panoramic views and incredible sunsets.

    DeziStyle DeziStyle

    5.  Stuff your face with some authentic local Mexican & Mayan cuisine.  Personally, I could eat tacos everyday for the rest of my life so it was a no-brainer for me when we sat under the beachside palapas and ordered lunch.  Seafood is fresh in this region so I also indulged in calypso shrimp stuffed avocados and a fresh natural juice.

    DeziStyle DeziStyle DeziStyle

A rare on-camera appearance by the guy who puts up with my unquenchable wanderlust and helps me document it along the way.  I love you Richie Chance!

    DeziStyle

    6.  Try your hand at deep sea fishing!  Akumal Dive Adventures is conveniently located next door to La Buena Vida.    Your fishing trip includes all the necessary components: boat, bait, tackle, drinks, fishing rods, reels, line & a knowledgeable captain who can lead you to big game.  I wasn’t able to try my hand at fishing but it comes highly recommended, as you can take your fresh catch to La Buena Vida and a chef will prepare it for you to your liking!

    DeziStyle

    7.  Find local wild life.  Between the iguanas roaming the sands, colorful birds flying overhead, or the turtles and sea creatures swimming about, you don’t have to search long before stumbling across any wildlife in the Riviera Maya.

Fun fact: Historically, iguana meat has played an important role throughout Mexican and Central American culinary tradition.  I hear it does not, in fact, taste like chicken.   Would you try it?

    DeziStyle

    8.  Get caught up, literally.  Hammocks seem to be an integral part of life on the peninsula and now I know why.

    DeziStyle DeziStyle

    9.  Go kayaking!  It’s fun but also allows you get a whole new perspective of the surrounding area.  As I mentioned earlier, the water is relatively shallow for quite a ways out, making it extra safe for those with children and aquaphobics alike.

  • 22 Unique Activities You Don’t Want to Miss While You’re in Costa Rica

22 Unique Activities You Don’t Want to Miss While You’re in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a country filled with lush landscapes and pristine beaches.  There’s a little bit of everything here for the traveler that enjoys nature and adventure.  Although its possible to spend your time in one town, I highly recommend renting a car and taking a road trip in order to really cover ground and see as much as possible.  Plus, if you’re anything like my husband and I, we like to experience all a city has to offer and move on.  Hey, you never know the next time you’ll be in a country like Costa Rica so why not do as much as you can!

Before we get started, here are a few words you should know before traveling to Costa Rica to help you get by.

    • Pura Vida! – Pura vida is used in many ways but the general idea of the phrase refers to the laid back, peaceful way of life in Costa Rica.  Think of it as the “hakuna matata” of the country.
    • Tico – Tico (or tica) is the word for a Costa Rican.  You may hear people use the term “tico time” quite a bit – this insinuates the leisurely, non-time conforming way of life.  In other words, don’t expect anything to be prompt or on time.
    • Soda – You may see these signs and think, boy, the Costa Ricans sure love their carbonated drinks but, the word soda actually refers to a small neighborhood “restaurant”.  Sometimes these sodas are located right in the home or garage of a families own home.
    • Perezoso – In Spanish it means lazy so it’s no wonder it’s also the word used to describe a sloth!  We might not need to know the term for it, but it certainly helps if you’re on the hunt for one like I was!
    • Pulpe (Pulperia) – A small convenience store where you can pick up essentials like toothpaste, fruit, beer, and other items.
    • Birra – The Costa Rican word for beer.  Very important to know.  😉
    • Mae – An expression similar to “Dude!” or friend depending on it’s context.  It can be used with acquaintances or strangers.

    39767_421574186569_1872960_n

    1.  Visit a coffee plantation – I swear, I didn’t even care for coffee before I came to Costa Rica for my first time.  I’m sure there are plenty of incredible plantations throughout the area but, the Doka Estate changed the game for me.  This was our very first stop upon arriving to Costa Rica via San Jose.  No kidding, we went to Doka before we checked into our hotel or even rented a car.  It was the perfect introduction to our trip and we actually learned a lot about the process of making coffee.  The best part?  Unlimited coffee samples.

    2.  Hike a volcano – There aren’t many that can say they’ve hiked to the top of a volcano.  Not only is this great workout but it gives you some pretty legitimate bragging rights.

    DeziStyle DeziStyle

    A peek into the crater!

    DeziStyle

*My absolute favorite coffee in the world, Poas Volanic coffee, grows on the side of this volcano. International shipping is available…just sayin’!

    3.  Go white water rafting – Costa Rica is known for their white water rafting.  Depending on the kind of thrill you’re seeking, you can choose to brave class 3-5 rapids.  Many are a combination of the three.  I would recommend you be at least a decent swimmer and be willing to put in quite a bit of work.  This is not for the leisurely.  (Notice our guide holding on for dear life?  He fell out twice & we had to retrieve him!)

    DeziStyle
    4.  Ride horses – Do go and ride horses, preferably on the beach.  It’s a unique way to explore the surrounding area and usually doesn’t cost much at all to rent them out for the afternoon.  You might even be able to buy some extra time off of your guide with a couple of Imperials (beers).

    DeziStyle DeziStyle

    DeziStyle DeziStyle
    5.  Swim in volcanic hot springs – Aside from being relaxing, soaking in the volcanic hot springs has a myriad of health benefits.  Hot water opens your pores and aids in blood flow and delivering oxygen to the rest of your body.  Minerals and other micro organisms provide your skin and bloodstream with beneficial elements found in nature and rejuvenate your skin.  We had heard about Tabacon Hot Springs and knew we had to take the opportunity to go.  It’s the only all-natural hot spring that is considered luxury, eco-friendly and carbon neutral in the area (Arenal), although there are other hot springs to choose from.  Tabacon boasts five pools ranging from 77 degrees to 122 degrees fahrenheit.    If you’re not staying at the resort, day passes can be a bit pricey ($85-95) but it’s definitely worth the splurge if you ask me.  *The day pass also includes an a la carte lunch.

    DeziStyleDeziStyle
    6.  Go zip lining – Costa Rica was the first place I ever zip lined.  Since then I’ve gone many more times throughout my travels around the world but none can compare.  We chose to zip line in Arenal and I’m so glad we did because the courses were spectacular!  *Tip: If you make reservations for the earliest time slot, chances are, you might be the only one in the group, giving you no lines to wait in and the chance to try some fun tricks with your guide.

    7.  Go snorkeling – There’s much to see under the sea!

    DeziStyle

    8.  Catch some rays – It’s pretty hard to avoid this one but throughout all your expeditions, be sure to stop and enjoy some tranquility.  The water is warm and the beaches are beautiful.

    DeziStyleDeziStyle
    9.  See wildlife in a National Park – Nearly a quarter of Costa Rica is comprised of protected jungle.  There is much to see in these national parks and each one offers something a little different.

    11.  Eat with the locals – One of my favorite things to do is try new cuisine so when in Costa Rica, do as the ticos do!  We met this friendly local by the beach and later in the evening, he took us to a neighborhood soda for some authentic food.  We would’ve never found this place on our own so don’t be afraid to make friends and try something new.

    DeziStyleDeziStyle
    12.  Go on a hunt for unique creatures – Under almost every leaf, crack or crevice, there are beautiful insects, amphibians and other “creepy crawlies” waiting to be discovered.  It’s a bit of a macro photographers dream here.

    DeziStyle

    DeziStyleDeziStyle
    13.  Go for a hike in nature – No matter where you go in Costa Rica, you’re bound to be surrounded by endless nature.  Take some time to explore by foot and work off some of that delicious food you’ve been indulging in.

    DeziStyleDeziStyle
    14.  Chase a waterfall – TLC may have sang about doing just the opposite but don’t be fooled, Costa Rica has some amazing waterfalls.  Chase away!

    DeziStyle
    15.  Visit the Cloud Forest – Monteverde is known to be the most well known cloud forest in the world for its unique biodiversity, conservation efforts and scientific research.  You can also step on each side of the Continental Divide, technically being on the Caribbean and Pacific side at the same time.

    DeziStyle DeziStyle DeziStyle

Beware of driving conditions through the more undeveloped areas.  These pot holes are why it’s best to have a vehicle that can handle such terrain.

    DeziStyle

    16.  Purchase some authentic Costa Rican souvenirs – I always like to bring something back for myself and my friends.  That being said, you should make sure you are purchasing true local goods.  Not only are they authentic items but you are supporting the people of region as well.

    DeziStyle
    17.  Charter a catamaran – Spend a day at sea snorkeling, sunning, drinking and swimming.  No further convincing needed.

    DeziStyle DeziStyleDeziStyle

    18.   Cross the sky bridges – These suspended bridges hang amongst the treetop canopies over canyons and drainages throughout the Monteverde rainforest.  There are six bridges in total and connect to other walking trails.

    DeziStyle
    19.  Go rock climbing/repelling – If you’re up for a (safe) challenge, give rock climbing a go.  The views are undoubtedly going to be pretty cool and repelling back down is half the fun!

    DeziStyle DeziStyle

    20.  Try the mud baths – Volcanic mud baths are messy and amazing!  Slather yourself in mineral rich mud and get your detox on.

    21.  Bathe outdoors – From mud baths to thermal pools, bathing outdoors only seems like the next best thing.  Cleanse your mind, body and soul!

    22.  Go kayaking – The perfect combination of exercise and leisurely drifting.  This was my first time kayaking and it was an awesome afternoon activity with my girlfriend.

Cinco de Mayo (translated into the ‘5th of May’), is a day commemorating the Mexican army’s dubious defeat over the French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.  Or, as American’s know it, the day in May dedicated to tacos, tequila and a strong possibility of sombreros and/or ridiculous adhesive mustaches.  Regardless of how you choose to recognize the day, one thing is for sure, there are some awesome perks around Los Angeles that won’t disappoint.

22 Things to do With Your BFF in Rio de Janeiro

    Rio de Janeiro | Brazil

“This article is dedicated to my best friend and travel partner, Antonella.  Thank you for always making life so exciting!”

Brazil is a place like no other.  The sticky heat, the lush jungles, the sexy, vibrant culture and sprawling beaches; it’s a destination that can inspire poetry and fill your heart.  I am a bit ashamed to admit that the apprehension other’s had about my journey to Brazil with a handful of girls started to weigh on my mind, hence why I opted out of bringing my DSLR camera and used only my iPhone to take photos. However, the moment we arrived to our beautiful beachside condo, all those insecurities vanished.

We were greeted by a beautiful Brazilian woman at our new home and given a run down of all the do’s and don’t of the city.  She then proceeded to escort us around the local neighborhood, showing us where to shop, dine and hang out.  I highly recommend having a local agent sort out what you need or wish to do while in Rio.  Although it’s not necessary, it ended up saving us a lot of time, negotiating and hassle of planning each thing along the way, allowing us to just go with the flow and make a call when we needed advice or arranging.

Hopefully you’ll have plenty of time to both explore and relax when you visit Rio.  The beaches can be magnetizing but there is much to experience around the city, too.  This was by far one of the most fun and well orchestrated girls trips I’ve ever been on; well worth the time it took to plan and arrange visas for.  I’d definitely be up for going back to write part 2 of this article…Their visas are good for 10 years, after all.  😉

    1.  Copacabana Beach.  This is first on the list because it’s one of the most well known destinations on the planet.  The beaches are dotted with colorful umbrellas shading relaxed beach goers and a steady stream of bicyclists and joggers on their designated paths.  Whether you’re laying out or strolling the coast, there’s much to see.  There’s also no shortage of beachside vendors waiting to sell you a much needed frosty beverage or delicious snack on a hot summer day.

    2.  Go to Sugarloaf Mountain!  The views are spectacular.  You really get a sense of your surroundings and the beautiful landscape of Rio de Janeiro.  Plus, the cable cars add a little sense of adventure to it!

    3.  Try Açai.  You’ll notice there’s always people walking around eating a cup of purple stuff with a myriad of toppings.  All you need to know is, it’s nutritious and delicious.

    DeziStyle Brazil

    4.  The Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden or Jardim Botânico is definitely worth an afternoon stroll.  Obviously this is more of a leisurely activity but the scenery is quite impressive and lush.  It’s a great way to learn more about Brazil’s botanical history or just get some fresh air.

    5.  Go Hang Gliding!  This is for the bold and adventurous!  It’s quite a rush, but after the launch it’s smooth sailing.  Glide through the air and get a birds-eye view of the incredible coastline and land right on the beach below.  You know you’ve got yourself a badass bestie if she’s willing to do this with you!

    7.  March in the Carnival Parade!  This only happens once a year so you’d have to plan ahead of time and be comfortable with wearing semi-ridiculous costumes but, it’s all part of the experience.  It can be really helpful to hire a local to set everything up for you prior to your trip.  The costumes and tickets were even delivered to our condo, which was extremely helpful.  It may seem like a very involved process to become part of a samba school, take the class, wear these elaborate costumes while dancing around enthusiastically for hours on end, and, it is.  But it’s also one of the most exhilarating experiences to be surrounded by the buzzing energy of hundreds of thousands of people in and around Sambadrome, chanting and dancing.  If all that sounds like too much, just grab a ticket and watch from the stands.  You definitely get a better view of the parade than when you’re marching in the thick of it.  Another option is marching in the parade one night and watching the second.  Up to you, but worth the effort if you ever find yourself going to Rio in February.

    8.  Make Your Own Cachaça Drink.  Cachaça (“ka-sha-sa”), the national spirit of Brazil made from sugar cane juice.  Put your own unique twist on it by adding different fruits or mixers.

    For one cocktail

    2oz. cachaça

    1 lime

     sugar syrup(optional)

    Club soda

    1 sugar cube

Cut the lime into segments and muddle it inside a tumbler.  Once muddled, add it to your glass and pour a shot of cachaça and sugar syrup over the lime and then add ice, preferably crushed. Mix it the with a spoon and add more ice. Add a lime wheel and sugar cube to garnish the drink and use to sweeten it, if necessary.  *For a healthier (and more tart) alternative, forgo the sugar syrup and use club soda.

    9.  Go See Christ the Redeemer.  It’s a cultural icon and considered one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.  If you’re doing it right, it’ll take an entire afternoon to make the trip up to the top.  There are plenty of picturesque waterfalls and lookout points along the way and the views from the art deco statue of Jesus Christ overlooking the entire city of Rio de Janeiro are pretty incredible.

    10.  Experience a Sunrise.  If you’re experiencing a sunrise in Rio you’re either extremely healthy or you know where the best discos are. Never in my life have I witnessed a more breathtaking, awe-inspiring sunrise.  I will always remember it as such a spiritual experience to share with my best friend.

    14.  Drink fresh coconuts.  There’s not much more of a satisfying moment than when you get that first big gulp of cool, fresh coconut water on a sweltering day in Rio.  It’s important to stay hydrated in the heat and watching them hack them open with machetes is always entertaining!

  • How to go to Catalina Island Completely for Free

How to go to Catalina Island Completely for Free

    *updated 4/2024

I love a good deal and Catalina offers quite a few.  Next time you’re planning an adventure, think of cruising over to this gorgeous piece of the Channel Islands archipelago.  With the right forethought into planning, you could essentially take a free trip to Catalina Island, including transportation, activities, food and dessert!

As travelers, we are always on the lookout for the best deals–last minute bookings, fare alerts, holiday specials, and accidental price drops on airline tickets; you name it. Sometimes these are the only opportunities we get to actually go to some of these places.  I believe these deals are wanderlust karma for all the hard and often-times tedious research we put into our obsession to roam.  Hence you can imagine my elation when I discovered a way to visit Catalina island completely for free!

As a former beach dwelling resident of L.A., the beautiful island of Santa Catalina seems but a stone’s throw away.  Yet I’ve somehow managed not to explore the island in the 16+ years I lived in California. Embarrassing, I know.  But, despite it’s beachy appeal and short boat ride away, tickets are usually around $84+ roundtrip ($65+ for children 2-11), making it quite an expensive commitment right off the bat.  However, that’s not to say it isn’t worth it.  Who am I to judge if I haven’t experienced it.  Plus, it has been brought to my attention that there are ways to get incredible discounts and even go for free if you are smart about it.  So, although it is odd for me to write about a destination I have not yet visited, it still seems like something worthy to share.

Getting to Catalina Island for Free

The first step is getting there and if you make reservations for your birthday, you will be eligible to receive a free roundtrip ferry ride for your birthday!  The catch is, you must travel during your birthday month.  Nonetheless, you’re welcome to stay up to 30 days before you make your return to the mainland.  Just be sure to bring ID as it may be required for proof.

**Update: unfortunately Catalina Express has decided to end their 6 year promotion offering free birthday ferry rides.  They continue to run promotions for Best of Winter in November and also have partnerships with AAA and Costco that are still available. However, there IS still a way to access FREE roundtrip boat rides to the island. See the offer from Snug Harbor Inn, Hotel Vista del Mar, and the Seaport Village Inn below!!

  • The Best Ways to Experience Belize in your Bikini

The Best Ways to Experience Belize in your Bikini

    Ambergris Caye, Belize

As sad as I am to be back in the chilly winter of L.A. (no really, it’s actually been cold for us Angelenos), I had one hell of a time in Belize on my holiday.  I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from the little 25 mile stretch of island called Ambergris Caye but my instincts led me to believe that bikinis would be an integral part of it all.  Boy, was I right.   DeziStyle   For such a “fun-size” island there is certainly much to do, or not do at all!  Regardless of where you end up staying, a swimsuit is naturally considered appropriate attire since anywhere you are on the island is near a beach.  This makes picking out your daily wardrobe simple and easy.  But what is one to do in said bikini?

    DeziStyle Belize Bikini Lychee Swimwear

Fortunately, Belize not only has the second largest coral reef system in the world, but it has become the dive and water sports capital of Central America.  The array of exotic marine life and mild temperatures year round make this an incredible destination for those who, like me, are eternally chasing summer.   DeziStyle   Personally, I love to be active wherever I am.  The more adventure, the better.  The same could be said about activities that require a bikini.  With warm, inviting waters it’s no wonder people come from all over to partake in the action.  Although tempting to soak up the sun in a beach chair all day, there are much more exciting things to do. Here are some of my favorites.   DeziStyle   Paddleboarding By far the best workout and the most fun!  Belize is known for having some robust winds so if you’re not a strong paddler, it can be a strenuous activity.  But not to be deterred, the waters are much shallower that it appears and more than likely, the tide will take you to right to shore should you tire.   DeziStyle   Beachy Activities A game of beach volleyball or football can always stir up some competitive fun but my personal favorite is paddle ball.  Nothing works up a sweat more deserving of a dip in the sea than a mean round of beach tennis.  (*During summer months paddle ball sets can be found at select Dollar Stores and are easy to pack in your suitcase or leave behind as a parting gift for the next guest)   DeziStyle DeziStyle   Boating There are multiple companies in the main part of San Pedro where you can inquire about renting a boat, or in our case, a catamaran.  An excursion like this one comes highly recommended.  Spend the day sunning, snorkeling and sipping rum punches.

DeziStyle Belize Shark Ray Alley SnorkleDeziStyle   Snorkeling Whether you rent a boat or just some snorkel gear, you’ve got to give it a go while you’re in Belize.  The waters are generally clear with incredible visibility.  Everywhere you look there’s something beautiful to see.  Hol Chan Marine Reserve is filled with an array of colorful fish, turtles and coral and Shark Ray Alley lets you swim with the sharks and stingrays up close. DeziStyle DeziStyle   Island Hop Caye Caulker is the little sister island to Ambergris Caye.  Stop off here for a seafood feast and some fresh coconut water, straight from the source.  The island is small enough to walk and has a handful of small shops, restaurants and beachside bars.     DeziStyleDeziStyle   Photo Ops Galore If you enjoy documenting your travels as much as I do, then I know you will appreciate the many picturesque photo opportunities there are here.  Each turn is somehow more stunning than the next, so don’t forget to stop and take it all in.   DeziStyle DeziStyle   Maxin’ & Relaxin’ Ok, ok, so sometimes down time is nice, especially after a long, hard day of activities in the ocean.  If you’re staying on Ambergris Caye, chances are you’re shacking up on waterfront property.  After all, the island is only about 5 miles across at it’s widest point.  After this trip, I’m pretty convinced that the waterfront pool/jacuzzi combo might just be the greatest thing that’s ever existed.  I’d also like to recommend a tropical beverage in hand once you go for that soak, they seem to go together swimmingly…no pun intended.   DeziStyle Belize Ipanema Swimwear Paddle board

Eye Spy You’d be amazed at what you can find right under your nose.  Hunt for hermit crabs, sea cucumbers, conch and starfish, just be sure to catch and release.   DeziStyle

  • 10 Countries to be Thankful for (and Travel to)

10 Countries to be Thankful for (and Travel to)

With almost 200 countries in the world, 196 to be exact..unless you don’t count Taiwan as a country (yep, that’s a thing), there are a ton of places that I still need to check off my bucket list.  This can pose a serious question to an avid traveler like myself.  Where should I go?  Why that city?  And, what good is it anyway?

These days my destinations of choice have less to do with nightlife and more to do with beautiful scenery, delicious cuisine and most definitely, some adventure.  That’s not to say that culture, history and their overall propensity for peace don’t also play a role.  Each country has it’s pro’s and con’s but there are some undeniable attributes as well as contributions that many have made that should be recognized.

So, in honor of Thanksgiving, what would be more appropriate than to pay respect and give thanks to the countries around the globe who are truly doing their thang?

    10.  Germany is a wondrous place for many reasons.  If castles and cold beers don’t interest you, a). I don’t think we could be friends and, b). there are still plenty of volksfests (aka festivals), outdoor activities, museums, hot springs and a world famous food scene.  They did invent the gummy bear after all.  We need to show a little respect!

    9.  Costa Rica was rated one of the top 25 places in the world on many different grading scales.  It has a reputation for it’s relaxed “Pura Vida” attitude that draws in millions of travelers each year and offers world class entertainment provided by Mother Nature herself.  You may have heard about the zip lining or volcanic heated hot springs but many don’t know that Costa Rica is, in fact, a very charitable country.  Seems all that karma is working!

    8.  Thailand is hands-down one of my favorite countries on the planet.  Between city and island life, you can choose which vibe you’re going for, knowing it’s a win-win situation.  Inexpensive massages by the beach and locally caught seafood dinners are an easy sell.  No wonder they coined the term, “same same, but different”.  It’s like everywhere else, but not.  We totally get it.

    DeziStyle

    7.  Canada has a pretty solid reputation for being clean, pleasant, stunningly gorgeous and leading the way on some pretty important social issues.  It’s also one of the world’s most ethnically diverse nations, with a bilingual status on the federal level.  Not bad, eh?

    Banff-National-Park-Canada-Beauty

    6.  Switzerland is a magical place.   Being born in Zürich may have made me a bit biased but the rest of the country is just as wonderful.  This notoriously neutral country lays home to many of the worlds patent holders, nobel peace prizes and international publications.  While the city is fun and entertaining, don’t neglect the spectacular countryside in all its splendor.  Food and adventure galore await you in this little slice of European heaven.

    5.  Australia may be home to some of the world’s most dangerous creatures but for those that dare venture to the continent, you will find incredible farms, cities, beautiful beaches and diverse cuisine choices.  The famous (pink) Lake Hillier can be found here as well as over 10,000 beaches to choose from!  You could literally visit a new beach every day for 27 years!  Australia just moved up a notch in my book.

    4.  Chile comes in under the radar but holds the record for being the longest country in the world, housing over 100 wineries, and the Chilean Patagonia is recognized as one of the cleanest places on the planet.  Not to mention, penguins can be found in several regions.  What more can you ask for?

    3.  The United States tends to take a back seat when planning my next trip but the more I explore my country, the more I realize just how much it has to offer.  America is a melting pot of all cultures, races and religions in an equally as diverse landscape.  Variety is the key word when it comes to the States.  And we are surely the Cheesecake Factory menu of a travelers world.

    2.  Ireland may not have been first on your bucket list but it ranks first place according to Good Country Index.  This means Ireland trumped every other country when it comes to overall health, technology, culture, equality and peace.  We also hear they’ve got a lively nightlife scene along with all the adrenaline pumping outdoor activities one could desire.  Need a little liquid courage?  I think they’ve got you covered.

    1.  Spain will always be #1 in my heart.  Who doesn’t love tapas and siestas, or Gaudî inspired architecture and sangria by the pitcherfuls?  Even with all these wonderful distractions, Spain still leads the way in humanitarian and food aid, pharmaceutical exports and excess donations to the WHO.  Spain truly is a diverse country with everything to proffer.  And for that, I thank you, Spain.

     Happy Holidays!

  • 10 Trails in L.A. That’ll Work Your Booty!

10 Trails in L.A. That’ll Work Your Booty!

Don’t underestimate the effectiveness a hiking trail can have on your health.  Hiking isn’t only one of the trendiest things you can do in LA, it’s also one of the best workouts you can get – for your booty and the rest of your body.  Imagine a gym: four walls, heavy machinery and bad music blaring over the speakers.  Now imagine yourself on top of a mountian, wind blowing in your hair and the feeling of triumph as you gaze over the horizon.  Which sounds better?  I thought so.

Los Angeles has some great hiking options throughout the city.  Here are my favorites:

    1.  Temescal Canyon – 15900 Pacific Coast Hwy, Pacific Palisades, CA 90272

This is my go-to hiking trail.  It’s a great combination of uphill and downhill (great for the glutes) with some pretty spectacular views of the Pacific ocean.  There are plenty of grassy areas and a park where one can picnic, rest or do cartwheels (as I do) at the bottom of the hill.  The bonus: Parking in the designated lot at the beginning of the trail will cost you $7 but there’s always free parking on Temescal Canyon Road, just before Sunset Blvd.  Plus, you’re just a moment’s drive away to the beach!

    2.  Murphy Ranch Trail – Capri Drive & Casale Road, Pacific Palisades, CA 90272

This can be a great workout if you know what you’re looking for.  There is a stairway that descends about 500+ steps down to yet another trail which will eventually lead you to an old, deteriorating Nazi compound from the 1930’s that is now covered in graffiti.  It can be tricky to find but worth the adventure.

    3.  Culver City Stairs – 6300 Hetzler Road, Culver City, CA 90232

Nature’s stair master.  If the views from the top don’t satisfy you, maybe all the delectable spots to dine in around downtown Culver City will.

    4.  Santa Monica Stairs – 4th St & Adelaide Dr, Santa Monica, CA 90402

Not technically a hike but it’s a guaranteed way to feel the burn.

    5.  Griffith Park – 4730 Crystal Springs Dr, Los Angeles, CA 90027

If you spent the day hiking through this park you might have come across equestrian trails, playgrounds, the LA Zoo or the Greek Theater.  There’s much to see and do here, hiking is just one of them.

    6.  Fryman Canyon Park –  8401 Mulholland Dr, Studio City, CA 91604

This is one of the more leisurely hikes of the ones listed here but still a great workout nonetheless.  Try running the course or adding weights if you find it to be unchallenging.

    7.  Runyon Canyon –  2000 N Fuller Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90046

Even if you’re not an LA local, you’ve probably heard of Runyon Canyon mentioned before.  It seems to be one of the more popular trails in all of Los Angeles for a few reasons, although some may not be as obvious as others.  Despite the attraction of seeing celebrities or it’s breathtaking vantage points, it actually is an incredible workout, especially if you opt for the non-paved route.    *A friendly tip:  to avoid crowds or the unpleasant smells of dog “business”, try hitting the trail in the early mornings or later in the evenings.

    8.  Will Rogers – 1501 Will Rogers State Park Rd, Pacific Palisades, CA 90272

This was my original go-to hiking spot when I first moved to L.A.  The length of the trail is doable for even the most inexperienced hikers but offers some great booty burning paths.  Enjoy views of the ocean and the occasional UCLA athletes.  😉

    9.  Franklin Canyon Park – 2600 Franklin Canyon Dr, Beverly Hills, CA 90210

Many Angelenos aren’t aware of this hidden gem in the middle of Beverly Hills.  It’s a peaceful 605-acre park that includes 5 miles of trails. picnic areas and a lake filled with ducks.  Great for a daytime date!

    10.  Abalone Cove Shoreline Park – 5970 Palos Verdes Dr S, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275

A bit more of a drive for those living in or close to central L.A. but well worth it.  Abalone cove sits at the bottom of a cliff, accessible only to those who dare make the decent down to its two beaches and picnic areas.  Try working your way down and back up again as many times as your legs will let you. I promise you’ll feel the burn with this one if you give it a chance.

  • You Might be a Travel Addict if…

You Might be a Travel Addict if…

ad·dic·tion  (n) : the fact or condition of being addicted to a particular substance, thing, or activity.

You may not have thought of your love for travel as such – an addiction.  But as a fellow avid traveler, it’s time we call it like it is.  We experience many of the same cravings, symptoms and withdrawals that any fiend might describe.  I’d like to believe this addiction is a healthy one to have though, so feel no guilt as you shamelessly pencil in one trip after the other.  In the end, you are merely building yourself up with each experience, to become the magnificent person you are today.  Happy travels!

You Might Be A Travel Addict If…

    1.  You chose a career that allows you to travel.  You may find yourself sleep deprived and/or underpaid at times, but its worth it.  Rack up those points, baby!

    2.  You can’t date someone who doesn’t have the travel bug, too.  They’ll never understand how you can be dreaming of your next adventure while you’re still in the present one.

    3.  To follow up, if someone you’re dating ever gives you an ultimatum, they will never win over travel.  Never.  So it’s not recommended, unless you want to break up, that is.

    4.  You have the Skyscanner or Skiplagged app on your main screen.  Let’s face it, if you have any travel app on your cell phone’s home screen, you are definitely going to be labeled a travel addict.

    5.  You feel antsy when there are no upcoming trips on the calendar.   Home is just the place where you store your stuff, give your family a hug (and prove you are not a complete vagabond), do laundry and re-pack your suitcase.

    6.  You take road trips often.  When you can’t swing an international jaunt, you’ll settle for a road trip somewhere, anywhere.  Even if it’s just for a night.

    7.  You could be described as personable.  People who travel are just sexier.  There’s a certain confidence that emits from those who have had to navigate their way through world, at times in precarious situations.  If you’re traveling the right way, you meet a lot of people,  making you more outgoing and open to life in general.

    8.  You have luggage nearby and ready to load up on a moment’s notice.  You may even have an emergency go-bag ready.  If you have that, than you most definitely must have your ready-for-anything pieces in the trunk of your car…you know, the spare bikini, flats and sweater.

    9.  You have subscriptions to multiple travel deal websites.  Sure, you might not open every single email they send but you feel a certain comfort knowing there will always be a travel deal awaiting you, should you click the link.

    10.  You’ve mastered the skill of sleeping anywhere.  Planes, trains, automobiles and all those nights in hostels have built up your tolerance to uncomfortable sleeping situations.  At this point, you know you’ve got to catch your Z’s when and where you can so you can hit the ground running when you arrive to your next destination.

    11.  Your passport is your prized possession.  You flash that baby like a badge of honor to TSA, customs agents, family, friends, the guy ID’ing you at the liquor store…whoever will look at all the pretty stamps you’ve collected.  You might even carry around your passport instead of an ID card just so you can have that fleeting ‘international feeling’.

    12.  You aren’t scared of trying new foods.  In fact, foods are probably one of the most enticing things about travel to you.  You look forward to finding the most unique and delicious dishes in each destination, and hopefully one of those meals will include the company of a friendly local.

    13.  You have friends around the world.  Your experience wouldn’t be complete without meeting at least a few local people and making lasting friendships.

    DeziStyle

    14.  You pack like a pro.  No need for an extensive packing list or a week of preparation.

    15.  Foreign languages and accents are a major turn on.  Don’t believe me?  Just hop over to Italy…or Spain…or Brazil…or maybe even Australia…

    16.  If you’re from America, the regular chain grocery stores at home seem like glorified storage lockers for fake food.  There’s no sadder feeling than coming back to the States after eating the freshest, realest and most flavorful foods around the world.  Thank heavens for Whole Foods.

    DeziStyle

    17.  Airports don’t intimidate you and TSA is a breeze.  You’ve done this drill a thousand times and none of it unsettles you.  It’s just part of the process at this point.

    18.  Your Facebook wall is filled with photos and tidbits of your adventures abroad.  On the contrary, your Facebook feed is probably filled with baby pictures and wedding albums.  They seemed to have jumped the gun, no?

    19.  You’re a member of ASW (A Small World).  This was a great free service to link up with other business savvy travelers around the world.  These days there is an annual membership fee of $110 but for those who travel frequently and want to connect with other like-minded individuals, it’s a great social network to join.

    20.  Culture shock happens when you come back home, not when you are traveling.  It takes time to sink back into your ‘real life’ routine…and it bores you immediately.  If you’re not bored, its probably because your mind is preoccupied with planning the next trip.

    21.  It isn’t unusual to find random coins or bills from other countries in your wallet or backpack.  It might even inspire you to re-visit a country..because you wouldn’t want those Euros to go to waste, of course.

    22.  You can relate to nomads.  Home is where you decide it to be.

    23.  You need a vacation from your vacation.  You spend your trip trying to make the very most of your time and get in as much as you possibly can.  Hey, you can sleep when you’re dead.

    24.  Family, friends and even random strangers on social media hit you up for travel tips and advice about anywhere around the world.  It’s just assumed you’d know better at this point.  TripAdvisor who?

    25.  You refer to cities in airport codes.  I mean, BCN is obviously easier to say than Barcelona, right?

    26.  Your friends at home think you speak strange lingo sometimes.  “Same, same but different” ring a bell?  How about getting together for a lekker Braai?

    27.  You convert the price of something into how much travel you could get for that amount.  Don’t lie, we all do it.  That new handbag costs how much??  A trip’s worth to Mexico, you say?

    28.  You feel the most free when you are in a foreign place.  The excitement of not knowing where the hell you are is quite the orgasmic experience.

    DeziStyle

    29.  You cry.  But only when it’s time to go back home.

    30.  You write blogs on being a travel addict.  Ah-hem…

  • 5 Frequent Faux Pas Americans Make When Traveling Abroad

5 Frequent Faux Pas Americans Make When Traveling Abroad

It’s inevitable and we all do it at some point or another when traveling– we unintentionally embarrass ourselves with a seemingly innocent and familiar gesture.  I know I’ve been guilty of it on more than a few occasions.  Who doesn’t love to take a sweet thumbs up photo in front of an amazing location?  However, if you’re passing through certain countries, you might want to reconsider.  As humans, we not only communicate verbally, but we express ourselves with facial inflections, gestures and body language, as well.  Needless to say, it’s important that we learn and utilize mannerisms that are politically correct, respective to each culture we visit.

Here are the top 5 most commonly misused gestures that I wish someone had told me about when I got my passport:

    1.  Thumbs Up

Generally seen as “cool” or a sign of approval in the United States…or perhaps a roadside request for a lift in various parts of the world, but you might get a different reaction from the locals should you be in Thailand, Greece, Iran or Afghanistan.  Thumbs up in these countries are viewed as profane, and in some places, like giving the ‘bird’.  On the contrary, it is known as “money” in Japan or “zero”  in France.

    2.  Peace!

This one can get you in some trouble if you aren’t aware of the direction your palm is facing when you make a peace sign.  In the U.K., Australia and some Commonwealth countries, a peace sign with the palm facing inwards is taken as a insult similar to “up yours”.  However, the palm out gesture is widely accepted around the world…most notably, in Asia.

    DeziStyle

    3.  A-OK!

Things are definitely not OK when using this common gesture in Brazil, Turkey and Germany.  This is quite possibly the most difficult one for me to remember when overseas.  How else am I to articulate how delicious my mouthful of food is when the waiter asks how my meal tastes (with impeccable timing, of course) ?  No, the last thing you’d want to convey to a person in charge of your food, is that you think he or she is an asshole…Unless, perhaps they are, and you are feeling rather cantankerous.

    4.  Pointing & Summoning

Generally, none of us get particularly warm and fuzzy when someone points at you or summons you by curling in their index finger with their palm facing up.  (Insert random memory of mom scolding me in public as a kid)  This is a pretty common feeling amongst many cultures, however, not as obvious to some.  It’s considered rude in China, Slovakia, Malaysia, East Asia, Singapore, the Philippines, and many other countries around the globe.  Should you wish to beckon someone, it is more appropriate to keep all fingers together and with the palm facing down, scoop your fingers in a scratching motion.  If you wish to point at something, offer a palm up gesture in the direction of which you wish to draw attention to, keeping all fingers together.  Think Vanna White!  Its safe to assume that it will garner you a more pleasant response, no matter where you go.

    DeziStyle

    5.  Yes Means No

Imagine your frustration when asking someone if they could help you with directions in Bulgaria or certain parts of the Middle East, only to have them nod ‘yes’ and then walk away!  A nod up and down of the head in many cultures would indicate an affirmative or positive response, however, this gesture means the exact opposite in other parts of the world.  Good to know for the next time that creepy guy at the bar in Bulgaria asks to buy you a drink.

  • 15 Weekend Getaways from LA for the Roadtrip Junkie

15 Weekend Getaways from LA for the Roadtrip Junkie

I eagerly look forward to summer every year.  Tis’ the season of warm weather and spontaneous road trips out of town.  Need some help choosing a destination?  There are many places to go but these 15 getaways are all just a drive away and are a guaranteed good time.

    1.  Big Bear

A trip to Big Bear seems to mark itself on my calendar semi-annually.  Weather its winter or summer, it’s always a good time.  During the summer months, enjoy plenty of on-the-water activities including boating, jet skiing, paddle boarding and kayaking.  There are also an array of hiking and biking trails, concerts and events that take place daily.  Downtown is rather small but has everything you could need – restaurants, bars, cinema and even bowling.  AirBnB makes it easy to enjoy Big Bear like a local but if you’ve ever felt the need to explore a more unique accommodation, check out Castle Wood Cottages.

    2.  Los Olivos

Los Olivos is one of five communities that make up the Santa Ynez Valley.  Most known for it’s wine tastings and small town vibe, it’s a gem of a location for a weekend escape.   The Santa Ynez Inn is the perfect boutique hotel for those seeking a little added romance.  Heated bathroom floors, jacuzzi tub and fireplace transforms your room into a cozy retreat, not to mention the perks a room key gets you when visiting local wineries.

    3.  Palm Springs

Ah, Palm Springs.  The city with whom I’ve only recently been acquainted with but have frequented on several occasions.  There’s much to do, or nothing at all, if you prefer.  A two hour drive puts you in this tropical little desert oasis where you can eat, drink, swim, gamble, dance and play golf to your hearts content.  For more on Palm Springs, see our past article, Weekend Retreat: Palm Springs.

    4.  Oxnard

Oxnard Beach may be a part of the greater Los Angeles area but you’ll feel lifetimes away from the hustle and bustle of city life.  Oxnard is definitely for those who are laying low.  Grab a good book and a bikini and you’ve got yourself the perfect afternoon.  As a foodie, you’ll have no shortage of restaurants to chose from and for the more adventurous type, fishing, water sports and a day trip to the Channel Islands are easily accessible.

    5.  Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara could be considered L.A.’s younger, more virginal little sister.  An hour and a half north on the 101 puts you smack dab in the middle of State Street.  From here you can commence in any direction desired…eateries, shopping, outdoor activities, pristine beaches, farmers markets, art and world class entertainment.  Santa Barbara lacks nothing.  For a calendar of events, click here.

    6.  Bass Lake

Bass Lake is an amazing getaway for two main reasons: sun and fun!  An day of jetski’s and eating finger sandwiches on the shore is my idea of a perfect afternoon, wouldn’t you say?  The surrounding Sierra National Forest makes for a venturesome playground of hiking, waterfalls and camping, should you favor a more intimate experience with the great outdoors.

    7.  San Diego

San Dee-Ahh-Go (As Ron Burgundy refers to it)!  City meets beach life at its finest.  Find comfort in all the fine dining, luxury hotel chains and nightlife offered in downtown San Diego.  It serves as the perfect middle ground for those not wanting to indulge in the extreme scene of Las Vegas but seeking more than just a small town getaway.  Catch a Padres game or ride bikes on the strand and follow up your evening with rooftop dining and a host of events happening all around the city.  If you can’t find it here, you may not find it anywhere.

    8.  Rancho Palos Verdes

Terranea Resort at Rancho Palos Verdes is quite deceptive – you would think you’re vacationing off the coast of Spain!  This massive resort includes beach access to incredible coastline and coves or their multiple ocean side pools.  Far enough away to feel as though you’re on holiday, but close enough to get away for just a night if that’s all the time you have.  **Be sure to check back often for specials and free night stays!

    9.  Kern River

Kern River always brings back good memories.  Perfect for families or young couples and friends looking to immerse themselves in nature.  Rafting trips and BBQ’s are what Lake Isabella is all about.

    10.  Big Sur

Big Sur is by far one of the most impressive coastlines in the world.  Whether you’re camping or shacking up in a plush resort, beauty surrounds you in every direction.  Lucia Lodge has an outdoor deck to enjoy food and beverages with some spectacular views that are certainly worth the inflated price tag.  Don’t let the drive deter you, its absolutely worth the trip.  Don’t forget your camera!

    11.  Madonna Inn, San Luis Obispo

Madonna Inn should be pictured in the dictionary under ‘unique hotels’.  Whenever I find myself in the area, it’s impossible not to stop, if even for just a quick bite at Copper Cafe.  Should you decide to stay, enjoy one of their 110 whimsically themed rooms or lounge with a cocktail at the poolside terrace.  The hotel is situated on over 1,000 acres of lush rolling hills and offers horseback riding on the property itself.  If saddling up isn’t your thing, wine country is just at your fingertips.

    12.  Solvang

Solvang was amongst my favorite California destinations growing up, and not much has changed.  This quaint little town is only about 2 hours away from Los Angeles but transports you to a Danish village with plenty of culinary delights and a relaxed atmosphere.  There is no shortage of bakeries or ice cream parlors, but if you’re craving something out of the norm, stop by the aptly named, Solvang Restaurant, for some piping hot Aebleskivers.  You won’t be disappointed.

    13.  Crystal Cove Beach Cottages, Newport Beach

Crystal Cove Beach Cottages were built in the 1930’s as a small seaside colony.  Today, 21 cottages have been restored to reflect the period between 1935 and 1955, when the Cove transformed into a community.  However, don’t expect anything cookie cutter, each cottage is themed differently and range from individual to dorm style.   Located on the ocean side of PCH in Newport Beach, guests can enjoy the beach, local restaurants and spectacular views.

    14.  Harrahs Resort and Casino, Valley Center

Harrah’s Resort and Casino sits tucked away in the beautiful rolling hills of Valley Center, just south of Temecula.  There are not many local restaurants or activities to partake in outside of the resort but why leave when you’ve got 2 pools, including a lazy river and 21+ section with a swim up bar?  They also host pool parties on the weekend both day and night, live shows and feature nine restaurants and cafés for you to choose from.  However, if you prefer to stay in your robe and catch up on your Zzz’s, room service will work just fine, just don’t forget to hit up the spa!

    15.  Glamping Hub, Various California Locations

Glamping, camping, treehouses, tipis and yurts.  Glamping Hub has got to be one of the coolest sites to visit if you’re up for unique, naturalistic adventure.  From tree houses to airstreams…yurts and eco-villas…this site offers more than 200 accommodations in California alone.

  • Travel Hacks: How to be Smart and Efficient

Travel Hacks: How to be Smart and Efficient

“If we were meant to stay in one place we’d have roots instead of feet”  Rachel Wolchin

In the past, I found myself basing café choices on establishments that were openly willing to share their wifi with me.  Do you know what it feels like to be smack dab in the middle of a foreign city with no clue how to proceed or communicate?  Well, gone are the days where I travel without access to unlimited free data, thanks to T-Mobile.  Phone calls are pretty reasonable as well.  However, there are undoubtedly times when wifi just works better.  A quick way to access wifi is to utilize the Foursquare app to find passwords for the places around you.  Handy for travel abroad, low mobile signal or when you just can’t foot the bill.

Bring a power strip so you can charge all of your devices at once.   (OK, and maybe his, too)

Bring your own thermos and tea bags.  As a daily tea drinker and enthusiast, I find the tea offered on airplanes to be unappealing.  I also prefer to indulge in a bit more than a tiny styrofoam cup’s worth at a time.  That being said, my Thermos has traveled the world with me for many years and I’ve never regretted it.  It adds a touch of home to foreign hotel rooms and it’s ability to keep the contents either cool or hot for about 8 hours, makes it great for life on the go.

    dezistyle

For those that travel for extended periods of time, you know that the hard plastic vitamin box either doesn’t last as many days as you need it to or is just an inconvenience to lug around.  I do, however use a vitamin box at home since I only need to refill it once a week.  Alternatively, it can be utilized to store smaller jewelry like earrings and delicate necklaces when traveling.  As far as my vitamins go, I store each daily dose in small jewelry sized resealable bags, or as some might know them by…dime bags.  You can find these at any craft or bead store.  Since I tend to dine out more frequently when traveling, its incredibly convenient to throw one in my day bag to take later on after I’ve eaten.   A little switcheroo that saves space and makes life a little easier.

    dezistyle

Try sites like AirBnB, VRBO or Homeaway for a more intimate, unique way of experiencing a city.  Renting an entire apartment can cost you just as much, if not less, than a hotel and I find that it’s so much more rewarding.  You can pretty much guarantee that the owners will be more than accommodating and happy to dish out some advice for the best local digs.  It can also save you money depending on your length of stay, not to mention the ability to shop at local markets and prepare meals or snacks in a home environment.  Now that has a good feeling to it.

Many of us run out to get manicures just before we jet set but as you know, they don’t usually last very long before chips occur.  I used to get acrylic nails many eons ago in order to keep my nails looking fresh throughout my travels but since I’m au naturel these days I’ve found two things that help me keep my nails in tip top shape.  First, ditch the square nail shape for a more rounded, almond shape.  This simple alteration in how I file my nails has improved overall sturdiness and they break or flake WAY less!  Secondly, try wearing a polish with glitter or sparkles.  There’s something about them that last longer.  I’m not saying you have to opt for anything crazy.  There are many beautiful, chic polishes out there that don’t scream Lisa Frank.  If you’re really not into it, just add a couple extra clear coats on top of your regular manicure for longer wear.

Most tv’s have a USB port now,  just in case you forgot the wall plug.  Take that, MacGyver.

To save a map in the google maps app, type “ok maps” and it will save the shown area offline.  This has saved my butt on many occasions out of the country.

If traveling with a partner, reserve the window and aisle seat on a flight.  Most people won’t want to reserve a middle seat, leaving you with a whole row.  Now you just have to decide who gets to lay down first.  Might I recommend rock, paper, scissors?

If traveling to a tropical destination, or one where a pool may see its way into your future, having a sarong can come in handy.  I have a couple Sandcloud towels for that very reason.  Use it as a blanket or shawl on the plane, wear it as a sarong or use it as a cute towel for laying out.  There have been many occasions where my hotels didn’t offer towels for beach use or charged a fee, if so.  This takes care of that problem and doesn’t take up much space at all.

Bring an empty water bottle with you in your carry on bag so you can fill up at a water fountain instead of buying one inside the terminal.  Unless you actually like paying $5 for it…

I haven’t tried this one yet but I’ve heard its quite a useful travel hack.  Use a binder clip to wrap and secure headphone wires so they remain untangled when not in use.  You can also use a binder clip to cover the head of your shaving razor to prevent accidental nicks.

    binder-clip

My sunglasses cases have lasted much longer than the actual glasses themselves over the years, leaving me with plenty of cases to use for things like: carrying international plug converters, jewelry, charging cables, feminine products, hair ties and bobby pins…you name it.

Stuff your shoes with your socks/underwear to save additional space.

This is a MUST!  When searching for flights, tickets or any kind of booking online, ALWAYS enable your private browsing before you begin.  Bots track your searches and often times will raise the price to match sites you’ve already visited or will predict what you are capable of spending and adjust its price accordingly.

Dryer sheets are great to throw in suitcases for a fresh scent and to keep clothes static free.  (I also heard a rumor that dryer sheets can help to repel bees, gnats and mosquitoes…)  Alternatively, you can throw a bar of hotel soap into your dirty clothes bag to keep the smell from penetrating your clean clothes.

Pick your seat with confidence using seatguru.com.  You’ll be able to view current seating charts for all flights, review baggage requirements, make reviews, find out which rows may not recline or if there are seats with extra leg room.

    aa-boeing-737

Download your airline’s app.  They will provide you with information and updates regarding your flight and usually offer paperless tickets as well.  Saving time AND the environment!

Before you begin the packing process, go online and request free trial size samples from each of your favorite bath and beauty companies.  These are great for travel and don’t cost you a thing!

Some airlines offer free stopover’s in their hub cities.  My very first trip to Dubai came about in this way.  Emirates flies to 140 destinations around the globe via Dubai and encourages you to spend a few days exploring the city!  This link for Emirates will take you to the page with the offer.  I might also add that Emirates is my favorite airline to travel on thus far.  This being just one of the perks.

A multitude of credit card companies offer benefits for those who travel.  The Chase Sapphire Preferred Card waives foreign transaction fees, doles out reward points for travel and restaurants and gifts you with a 40,000 point signup bonus upon registering.  There is an annual fee but it’s much less than American Express and can save you a significant amount of dough when you redeem your points.

To make fashion easy, pack clothes that fit in the same color schemes.  Neutrals and black are always a safe bet and are versatile for night and day.

Ladies, how many times have you gotten out your makeup bag after a long flight, only to discover that your favorite pressed powder has been broken into a thousand pieces?  A quick trick to help prevent such things from happening is to stick a cotton ball inside the case prior to flying.  That way if anything gets dropped or knocked around, your makeup will still be intact.

Fun fact:  You are allowed to bring miniature bottles of alcohol on your flight.  I learned this a little late in the game but, better late than never!

And lastly, keep a copy of your passport and credit cards in your email.   Hopefully you’ll never have to thank me for this one.
